I truly cannot get enough of that stitch.  It makes the most perfectly textured fabric.  It should be a hot mess…there are vertical lines and diagonal lines and holes and it should just be a little too busy.  But somehow the result is deeply, deeply satisfying.  I can’t quite explain why.  But I can say that I had more fun knitting it than any reasonable person should.

Some of that is certainly due to the yarn.  I’ve been using single ply yarns for all of these hats (I think they show off the stitch patterns better because you don’t have the shadows between the plies that can happen with plied yarns).  And I swear you can get away with wilder stitch patterns the more mellow your yarn is.  And it doesn’t get much more mellow (or much more lovely) than this.

It’s Satchel by Mrs. Crosby (in the color greystone), and it’s one of the most well behaved yarns I’ve worked with.  It doesn’t split, it doesn’t grab your needle, and it doesn’t get tangled (some single ply yarns seem to have a tendency to kink up on themselves and get knotty…this one would never even think of pulling shenanigans like that).  It’s absolutely grand.  The good folks at Mrs. Crosby are going to send somebody a skein of it in the winner’s favorite color.  All you have to do is follow the instructions on this instagram post for a chance to win.
