Explicate
Published On: January 31, 2023

The hat is out on both ravelry and payhip! It’s called Explicate, and I can’t remember the last time I was this amused with a project.

Now let’s be real, the knitting on this is pretty mellow. Ribbed brim, stockinette body, pretty little decreases on the top. All the excitement comes from that gorgeous embroidery. And that’s what vast majority of the pattern is about.

There are dozens of step-by-step photos to walk you through every bit of it from the duplicate stitch at the brim to the decorative stitch on the body of the hat to the (optional) braid at the top (because braiding all those ends is way more fun than weaving them in). You can absolutely do this, even if you’ve never embroidered anything before.

And of course the hat itself comes in oodles of sizes (eight) and gauges (seven), so you can use a huge array of yarns for the hat. Pretty much anything from heavy fingering up through aran weight should work!

As for the embroidery, you can do one, two, three, or four panels of embroidery (I did two), and each panel can use anywhere between one and six colors for the embroidery (I used two colors in each panel, yellow & gray for one blue & gray for the other). It’s absolutely perfect for using up scraps left over from other projects or tiny bits of handspun too precious to waste.

Rampant Nonsense patrons, you should already have it in your inboxes (and yes, if you sign up now, you’ll totally get access to it right after you join)! Other patrons and mailing list folks, you should have a discount code waiting for you in your inboxes. Everyone else can use the code STABBY for 10% off through Friday February 3.

I can’t wait to see what combinations you all come up with for this one. I suspect they’re going to be amazing!
