Monthly Reminder
Published On: August 7, 2023

Every month I write a post saying “abortions are good” & send a donation to Aid Access. And this month, I’ve got something you can do to support abortion access! Well, something those of you registered to vote in Ohio can do, though I’ve got some ideas for the rest of you too.

So tomorrow (that’s Tuesday, August 8), there’s a special election in Ohio. And while abortion isn’t specifically on the ballot, it is in a kinda sneaky way. Here’s the deal.

The chowderhead, anti-choice republicans called a special election (in the middle of summer, when fewer people are paying attention) to try and make it harder to change Ohio’s constitution. And the REASON they’re doing that is to make it harder for Ohio to update the state constitution to increase abortion access at the regular election in November. So basically if Issue 1 passes now, it will be much harder for abortion protections to pass in the fall.

Which is bad! So we want issue 1 to fail!

Now the good news is that early turnout to vote has been absolutely phenomenal for this one (with democratic-leaning voters showing up in higher numbers than republican-leaning ones)! But if you’re in Ohio and registered and haven’t voted yet, please please please find a way to go stand in line tomorrow and do it.

This one really matters. And if enough folks show up and vote against it, good things can happen in the fall.

Now, do I wish I’d told you about this earlier? Yeah, that would have been cool. But I’ll be honest, keeping up with all of this is kind of a lot, and sometimes, I miss stuff. And I bet that happens to you too.

So if you’re not in Ohio, can you take a second and see what might be coming up in your state (Maryland and New York both have things coming in 2024 that will add abortion protection to their state constitutions)? Or take a moment and check your voter registration so you’ll be all set to vote when something is happening in your state (google ‘check voter registration’ plus the name of your state or head over here)?

And if you’re in Ohio and able to vote tomorrow, please show up and show those absolute chowderheads their sneaky tricks won’t work (here’s the Ohio Secretary of State’s page if you need to check your registration or find your polling location or double check any other details).
