Bat bits
So our sweet, chompy little friends are out (Fangs, on both payhip and ravelry, and 15% off for the next couple of days with the code BATTY). And, just in case you were wondering about innards, I’m going to link you to the stuff I used on mine.*
First is peg dolls. These come in a fairly limited range of sizes. I used one of the super duper giant ones (easier to see the step by step photos on this one), and I love them at that scale, but they are a bit harder to find at that size. These are delightfully sturdy and hefty (nearly 5″ tall and nearly 2″ across). The same seller offers slightly smaller sizes as well. This is a 40 pack of slightly smaller ones (3.5″ tall, a hair over 1″ across). I like this pack specifically because the dolls are all the same size (the small ones in multipacks tend to be too small for what I like to use them for), and they’re all the straight body shape (not the one that looks sort of like a dress), which is what the pattern is intended for. And here is another similar one in case the first is out of stock.
Next up, wings. You really just need something that gives you wing vibes, that won’t fray, and that you can cut with scissors. I absolutely know people will come up with more ideas that what I’ve done, and I’m looking forward to seeing it. But I pulled from the depths of my (admittedly well stocked) closet some faux leather sheets like these (they have black and several shades of brown/gray), cork fabric like this (which comes in several shades of brown, and also a dark orangey red that could be amazing), and felt (I like these because they have a set with 12 colors of gray and another with 12 colors of brown). And then…then because I’m me and good sense is overrated, I also played around with some of the more absurd options in the scraps bin. Like glitter sheets or translucent, iridescent sheets or holographic sheets. I eventually settled on the more sedate options, just because they match better with the vibe of my other work and where I like to take my pictures. But oh, oh I am hoping we get some bats with wild wings here in the near future!
So yes, assemble your little peg doll army. Dress them up as bats. Teach them to fly. And keep a whole flock of them around you at all times, ready to do your bidding, bring joy to your friends, and wreak havoc among your enemies. Or possibly just knit a couple and add them to your Halloween festivities. As your prefer!
Once again, the pattern is called Fangs. It’s out on both payhip and ravelry, and you can use the code BATTY for 15% off for the next few days!
*These are amazon affiliate links. Amazon is trash, and I strongly encourage you to shop elsewhere if you can. But I also know that amazon is often the only feasible way to get some weird little gizmo, especially if you live in the middle of nowhere and want it quickly (to find these peg dolls and wing materials in a store would require me to spend at least four hours driving to at least two different places, and I just don’t have time nor do I want to put the miles on my car). So if I’m going to point people to amazon, I’m more than happy for amazon to give me a few cents of the money they make. But if that bugs you, there should be plenty of info for you to search them on your own!
