Evidence
The chop was a success, and I decided the cuffs needed to get a trim to match. Because to do otherwise would bug me. I don’t make the rules, I just live here.
And when I went to trim them, what did I find but evidence of a previous bit of intervention on this sweater. Turns out at some point in the past (do I recall when? no. can I find mention of it on the blog with a cursory search? also no.) I had mended a tiny little snag on the arm of this sweater. It looks like I intended it to be fairly subtle (this was classed as one of the grownup sweaters meant for leaving the house in, and I was more restrained about these things in the past), and it seems to have held up quite well.
This fills me with glee. I cannot properly explain it, but the idea of continuing to mend and modify my clothing so that it stay in the rotation and is of use for as long as possible feels both natural (no really, look at most any piece of historical clothing and you’ll see evidence of continued work done to it over time) and deliciously subversive (me fixing my clothes means I’m not buying something new from the companies that have done their very best to convince me I need to buy a new piece of clothing every week).
And yes, yes I did save the bit I cut off the bottom with the intention of making elbow patches, since that’s always where my sweaters wear out first. Because if we’re going to do this, we’re gong to do it all the way.
