Innards
Innards! Let’s run down what’s inside these, and what you need to make them…First things first, the pattern is called Drifts and it’s on both ravelry and payhip.
Next up, these are a combination of knitting and embroidery. You knit the round bit, then embroider all over it in lovely, snowflake-ish patterns, then shove something in there to make it all nice and round.
For the knitting, I used somewhere around 50-75 yards of yarn in various weights (sock(ish) for the smaller balls, around 2.5 inches in diameter, getting thicker and thicker until I got to worsted for the biggest balls, around 4 inches in diameter). For the embroidery I used about 10 yards per ball of something frosty. All my blues are from Seven Sisters Arts (because yes, she does the very best blues, and yes she does have some mini skeins of the bits I used in mine, should you be so inclined). The whites are scrap bin friends and long ago lost their papers.
Inside I have either plain ornaments (glass or plastic depending on your risk tolerance and/or the ingenuity of your cats or children) or styrofoam balls (3 inch or 4 inch). If you go with ornaments, they have built in hanging hooks. If you go with styrofoam balls, you can actually buy those little ornament caps and add them on, should you be so inclined.*
And oh, oh the ones made on styrofoam balls are perfect for throwing really hard at the nearest piece of soft furniture, should you feel such a desire.
And yes, you absolutely could fill them with something soft like polyester or wool stuffing. But…they won’t be as round. And if that’s ok with you, then have at it! But I wanted mine to be round roundy round round, and I couldn’t get that with soft filling, so I did this instead! But you are the boss of your knitting, so you do what makes you happiest.
Once again, it’s called Drifts, and of course I tell you how to do the embroidery! But only you can decide what to throw them at.
* All of those are amazon affiliate links. Amazon is evil, but also convenient especially for stuff like this that is hard to find locally for some folks. If you’re gonna buy it there, and you want me to get a couple cents off of their profit, you can use those links. If you don’t like affiliate links, you can totally totally just search for things there on your own. Or better yet find stuff locally if that’s an option for you!
