Big head
Published On: June 3, 2025

I, being of an indoor disposition and northern european extraction, am oft afflicted by the sun. I, also, being of a certain age am wholly committed to sun protection (dr. jart every sun day mineral sunscreen, highly recommend). So it makes sense that I possess a sun hat.

But  I also possess a shockingly large head (24.75 inches, yes really, yes I measured more than once, no it’s not all hair). And a lot of hair. So the hat has a tendency to creep upward, for it is just a hair too small.

Now, I also am custodian of a rather substantial head form (does it look like a loaf of bread here? yes, yes it does). It’s actually bigger than my head and has pin holes that lead me to believe it was used in some sort of wig making capacity.

And I think I’m going to soak the hat, stretch it over the head form, and let it dry. With luck, I will end up with a slightly larger and thus better fitting hat. Worst case scenario, I have a hat that doesn’t quite fit. Current scenario, I have a hat that doesn’t quite fit. Seems like a very low stakes undertaking. What can go wrong (I say, knowing full well this is how we doom a project to failure, but still, let’s risk it!)?
