Cat Butt Cast On
Right, so, up to you what you call this one. But once I heard that particular name for it I certainly never forgot. But either will work if you’re trying to search online for other ways to do it.
This cast on starts with making a loop of yarn around your finger (or something else), forming your first round of stitches around that loop of yarn, then tightening the initial loop up to make it as small as possible. That means your stitches start out already joined in the round, ready to start working out from the middle. It’s nicely round and tidy and I much prefer it to casting on a tiny handful of stitches and trying to join to work in the round, especially for a project like this where the cast on is right there front and center.
Now the video shows how I do it. I emphasize the ‘how I do it’ part because there are Multiply Equally Good Ways To Do This. If you have a different way of doing it that you like better, that is grand, please absolutely feel free to do that instead! There are no knitting police, and if there were, I certainly wouldn’t be on their side. This is just what I like.
But the way I do it is by making a loop around my non dominant hand’s index finger, then using a crochet hook to first pull my working yarn under that loop, then make a stitch in that loop of yarn on the crochet hook. That will make more sense if you watch the video! But I do that for each of my cast on stitches, move things over to my needles, and tighten up the loop that was initially on my finger.
This is one of the literally three cast ons I can do without having to go look up how to do it, which gives you a sense of either how much I like it or, possibly, how bad I am at remembering cast ons. Either way, I think you’ll enjoy having a version of this in your toolkit, and I think it’s a great start to our little egg friend!
Admin/Navigation:
- I’m posting a series of videos to go along with our upcoming egg pattern. Anyone with any level of membership (yes even the free one) has access to watch all the videos!
- The pattern will be out in a few weeks. Rampant Nonsense folks always get all the new patterns as they come out, and it will be eventually be available to other folks in some format or another.
- You don’t need to watch the videos if you don’t like to learn that way! You an always use the patterns by themselves, you don’t need to watch this to use the pattern. This is just for folks who like to listen to someone talk them through it or want to see it rather than read about it!
