Lifecycle of a sweater
Published On: August 6, 2025

Ok so I want to do a thing. I want to document the lifecycle of these sweaters. By that I mean I want to keep track of when I wear them and when I wash them and when I depill them and when I mend them and when they go from being the Wear Out In The World sweaters to the Wear Around The House sweaters and when, in the fullness of time, they are eventually worn enough that they can’t be sweaters any more and instead turn into something else entirely.

Because lately I’m loving seeing how things come to bear the marks of use on them over time, and I want to watch that happen on these sweaters in a really intentional way. And because carefully caring for and joyfully mending my clothes feels ever so slightly subversive in a culture that encourages us to buy new stuff at a frankly alarming and deeply unsustainable rate.

So I’m thinking about posting occasional updates on them here (emphasis on occasional, I hereby solemnly swear not to post every time I wear a damn sweater, this is Maine, that would be tedious in the extreme). Because I get the impression a lot of you also want to care for your clothes this way, but sometimes it feels a little bit daunting, and maybe you’d like a little bit of encouragement or guidance. And well, this is one of those things I can talk about, at length, with only the slightest prompting.

So what do you think, do you want to get occasional notes from these sweaters over the next few years? Or have I finally found the thing that’s just a little too absurd, even for us? Let me know!
