Speedrunning a skirt
Published On: September 2, 2025

On Saturday afternoon, I decided, for reasons probably known to someone but certainly not to me, that I absolutely had to make a skirt over the long weekend. Step one was dragging out the suitable candidates from the fabric pile.

Then narrowing them down (the light colored plaid is a lovely silk and linen that is better suited to warm weather, as is the floral, I’m considering lining the purple one and don’t have the fabric for that yet).

That left two contenders, both of which I absolutely want to have available to wear this fall and winter. But the denim is something I’d wear right now (whereas the orange wool plaid is basically a blanket and a little too warm for the weather right now), and the thought of matching plaid wasn’t something I wanted to deal with (plus I have a new plan for the waistband on the orange one and sort of need an extra yard of that linen to make it happen). So the denim was the winner.

So off it went to the dining room table, along with a couple of roofing squares and some scissors to cut out all the bits. This skirt just uses a stack of trapezoidal panels for the body and a couple of rectangles for the waistband, so it’s easy to just fold the fabric up and cut everything at once.

I stopped there for the day, since sewing is a morning task and the urge to make this didn’t come upon me until midafternoon. But everything was ready to go for the next morning.
