Pocketses
So look I’ll be honest. Making the pocket for this takes about as much time as making the skirt and waistband combined. It’s not that it’s hard, it’s that it’s three pieces, all of which are curvy, all of which have to fit together just right, and some of which require a bit of industrious ironing.

I’ve made a couple of these skirts without the pocket. And it’s absolutely faster and simpler to do it that way! But I also think ‘god damn it, why didn’t I put a pocket in this’ every single time I wear those skirts. So this time I went ahead and did the pocket. Because an hour or two of pinning and muttering and ironing now means greater utility every single time I wear the skirt in the future. And that’s a fair trade.

Plus it’s a really good pocket. A really big pocket. A really sturdy pocket. A pocket that works whether this is on my left or my right side. And yes, I’ll say it, a pretty pocket that I get to feel smug about. I know scale can be hard to judge on a screen, so that’s my phone case there, just to give you a sense of how much room we’re talking about (the yellow line of stitching is where I attached the denim liner to the pocket fabric so that you don’t see the pocket fabric on the outside of the skirt, not the opening to the pocket…the opening to the pocket is much higher up).
So come Sunday night, I had the skirt, complete with excellent pocket, and the waistband both ready to go. All I had to do Monday was gather the skirt and fit it into the waistband.
