A problem and a plan
Published On: August 25, 2026

So I have a sweater, a problem, and a plan.

The sweater is this lovely yellow, cotton, store-bought number. The problem is that there’s not quite enough room in the armscye, so it ends up being weirdly tight in the armpit (do I feel weird saying this? yes! am I likely to be the only human being in the entire world who has ever felt like the armpit of their top was too tight? I must assume not…).

The plan involves knitting a little diamond shaped gusset out of some spectacularly well matched yarn (also cotton, so they should wash the same way), opening up the seams at the armpit, and sewing the gusset in.

I’m confident nothing on the original sweater will unravel (I can see that the panels all have finished edges). I’m confident that having an extra inch or two of stretchy fabric in the spot where two rigid seams come together will give me a little extra ease and movement. And I’m confident it will be a good exercise in making my clothes suit me (rather than feeling like my body is wrong, which is a bullshit thought that bad people spent lots of money to put in my head so they could profit from it and which I seek to stomp out whenever possible).

I’m very slightly hesitant because this won’t be actually invisible (what with it involving introducing a few square inches of new material). But really, if anyone is peering that hard at my armpit, they are the ones making it weird, and I just don’t need to actually consider their feelings on the matter!
