Hyperfixation

Right, so, you know that thing where something catches your attention and then, for some unknown period of time, it’s all you want to do? At least until the next shiny thing comes along, at which point you lose all interest in it (though there’s a decent chance it or something related to it will come back around if you wait long enough).

Right. Yeah. So. Currently in the grips of one of those. Have been for a couple of weeks now. It shows no signs of abating (though let’s be fair, the dismount is always unpredictable and often swift).

And part of me feels like I should apologize for that and promise to get back to some better use of my time? But a much larger part says a big fat NOOOOOOOPE to that. Big nope. Hard nope. Full on nope. We are allowed to do silly, pointless things that bring us joy. We’re allowed to make pretty things just for the sake of making pretty things. We are not required to be practical or productive at all times. We can just Do Silly Little Crafts Because They Are Fun. We can invite our friends over to Do Silly Little Crafts, even if we are grown ass adults with long to do lists.

Or at least that’s what I tell myself. While I do my silly little crafts. For no reason other than the hope that they’ll bring me a brief moment of relief from the horrors of the day. Even if the dishes are not done and the garage is a mess. Perhaps especially if the world is overwhelming and the list of things I should do instead is long.

Because I cannot fix the world, and I am never going to feel like everything I should do is all done all at once. But I can, for just one moment, think ‘ooooh, look what I did!’ And that makes it easier to show up tomorrow and call my senator, again. And do the laundry, again. And go to the grocery store, again. And really, that feels like more than enough to ask of a little paper flower.
