The thrift shop gods have smiled upon me!⁠

That purple caught my eye first. Then I petted it, and it had the feel of that sort of slightly rustic wool that will transform beautifully when given a proper dunking. Then I looked at the label, and it seemed encouraging. Then I looked at the price, did a little math, and realized all this cost less than the last skein of fancy hand dyed I bought. So I said yeah ok why not.⁠

The plan was ‘I like pinky/purples, I know someone who would take those tealy/blues off my hands if needed, it’s never a bad idea to have a neutral, and the green and brown would be great to stitch leaves/vines on the blanket I’m embroidering…plus lots of bonus blog content’ (this is what happens when you’ve been finding something to post several times a week for coming up on eighteen years).⁠

Later in the day I found myself with ten free minutes before my next appointment, so I looked up the info on the label, and it turns out I might have found something rather special. It’s by J. C. Rennie & Co, it is indeed wool, and it was indeed quite a steal.

It also turns out that those bigger cones have what can only be deemed a terrifying amount of yarn on them. The information on the website contains the sentence “we can normally make three or four sweaters with a 0.85 kg cone.” It also suggests that a full cone has about 4,300 meters on it.

Now these are very much partial cones! And I am a large human. But there’s about 1.5 kg of the various shades of purple and over 1 kg of the blues (after deducting a gracious margin for the cones), and that cream one is just barely short of the original 0.85 kg. Which means there’s almost certainly got to be at least enough yarn there for a blue sweater and a purple sweater.

And there happen to be not one but two flat bed knitting machines floating around in my craft tool arsenal (do I know how to use them? no, but that’s a different problem for a different day). Which means I might possibly be about to change my mind about that whole ‘I don’t knit sweaters’ thing.

Now…if you’ll excuse me, I need to go back to the thrift shop and get the other cones in the colors I don’t like as much…for practice!
