Ok, check this out, this is what different fuzzy yarns can do to the same base yarn.
All three of these hearts are knit with the exact same base yarn (that little ball of single ply mystery yarn down there at the bottom, alas label-less and from deep in the leftovers bin, so I have no idea what it is) held with three different strands of fluffy laceweight.
The pink heart is the base yarn held double with Molly Girl Yarn’s Motown Lace Weight in the color Alive For The First Time (yes, yes it really is that delightfully bright in person, it’s marvelous).
The purple heart is the base yarn held double with Shibui Knits’ Silk Cloud in the color Velvet (I’ve loved every single thing I’ve knit with this yarn, including the brioche hat that weighed in at something like 20 grams when it was done and can literally blow right off your head in a strong wind).
The orange heart is the base yarn held double with what I think is Rowan Yarns’ Kidsilk Haze in Golden Poppy, but the label is off having an adventure somewhere else, so I can’t swear to it, but it’s one of my favorite bases, so the chances are awfully high.
The resulting fabrics look like wildly different colors. They have a surprisingly different feel as well, given that all of the fuzzy yarns are laceweight silk/mohair blends and really quite similar in weight and construction. All of which is a long way of saying that you can completely change the color, drape, and feel of a yarn by holding a bit of fluff alongside it.
Which is both marvelous, and frankly, a bit alarming, as it rather significantly increases the possibilities for what I can do with my stash (as well as giving me an opportunity to collect copious quantities of fuzzy floofballs).
