Sensory Issues
Let’s talk about sensory issues and yarn!
I’m autistic, and I have a LOT of sensory issues, and they very much dictate what yarn I like and use. I’m not alone (and lots of us HAVE sensory issues without KNOWING we have sensory issues).
I was talking with someone who is starting to get into yarn and also has sensory issues, and we were talking about how going into a yarn store can feel HARD when you don’t know much about yarn yet, and sensory issues just make that even more complex.
So I started trying to launch into the “Yarn: Here’s How it Works” lecture that I have in my back pocket at all times, when I quickly realized that was about to veer off into a flowchart and a slide deck and fifteen visual aids. Which might be a bit much. So I asked if I could maybe just send some little samples from the scraps bin to illustrate some of the differences I was talking about.
Because touching them is best! But seeing them on video with some narration might be a close second. So I’m going to see if I can’t share some of that over on IG & Patreon as I put this together.
- So…what sort of sensory issues do you run into with yarn, and how do they affect your yarn choices?
- What do you wish you’d known when you were just starting to learn how to buy yarn?
- If you’re new at picking yarn, what parts of it feel confusing or overwhelming?
