Turn turn turn
Published On: January 14, 2026

Psst, wanna learn about turned hems? If you do, I wrote up a little guide to them. Should you wish to peruse such a thing, wander over this way.

I used turned hems on both of these hats (they’ll be out next, after the snowflake hat), and it’s quickly become one of my absolute favorite ways to start a hat. It’s tidy (all stockinette, no curl), it’s warm (double layer on the chilly ear bits), it makes good use of yarn (because dammit, one skein isn’t quite enough for the whole hat, but if I use a different yarn for the brim then all of a sudden it is), and I think it’s pretty (cough, especially if you take the aforementioned other yarn and…do stuff with it).

Which seems like quite a lot for a simple little technique like this to accomplish. So if you’d like to play with it, head on over and give it a try!
