And oh, oh it feels weird to try and do my job right now, because everything is on fire and all I want to do is hide. But hiding is not an option, so we shall be loud instead.

So here’s what we’re going to do…I’m going to say ‘hey, this pattern is out,’ because that’s my job and I have to do my job to survive. Because one of the unexpectedly difficult things about what’s going on right now is finding out that a handful of people I thought I knew and respected are ok with what’s happening, and I want to make absolutely sure each and every one of you know exactly how I feel.

And then I’m going to encourage you to find something you can do in your community to help. Drop something off at the food bank. Shovel your neighbor’s sidewalk. Call your mayor and tell them to keep ICE out of your town. Poke around online and see if there’s a group organizing in your area (I bet there is, I live in rural Maine in a town of about 5,000 people, and I’ve got several near me) and show up to one of their trainings. Donate ten bucks to a mutual aid organization in your area. I don’t care what, just do something. You’ll feel better if you do.

Then put your phone away for a couple hours and hang out with a friend or play a game with your kids or make something pretty or take a nap or whatever else makes you feel stable. Then get up tomorrow and do it again.

Because that’s how we get through this, lots of tiny little moments of helping each other, and lots of little breaks to take care of ourselves. Because these assholes won’t win. There are more of us than of them, and we’re better people. So find the other people who are as scared and angry as you are and help each other.
