Cool, new problems
Published On: March 26, 2026

I firmly believe that one of the signs you are dong cool, new things is that you start running into cool, new problems. That happened with the cards (don’t worry, it’s already fixed), so I wanted to give you a quick update.

TL;DR version right up top:

We’re swapping the Notable Nonsense schedule so that the printed version of these goes out first (in April) and the punched version goes out second (in May). I’d initially planned to do them the other way around (and mentioned that in at lest a couple of places), but the staggering cleverness and astonishing coolness of the project (temporarily) stumped my printer, so the punched ones are on a slight delay. So I’m swapping the order in which they come out.

You don’t need to do anything at all about this, I’m just letting you know that I’m swapping the order of them!

Longer version for folks who want the details:

Ok so at this point I take it as a point of pride when my printer (or anyone else I’m working with to make neat stuff) comes back and says ‘right, so, we ran into something unexpected.’ Because god damn but every single time it’s because I want to do something extra cool and they’re having to figure out how to do it for me. And oh that tickles me every single time…even though it can occasionally mean a small freak out in the middle there until it’s figured out.

And that’s exactly what happened here. Turns out that to cut a piece of paper into a particular shape, you make a thing called a die (think ‘big metal plate that does the cutting/punching/shaping.’ rather like what you’d find inside a fancy hole punch). And this project, as you might imagine, needs a custom die. And it turns out, when you have seventy zillion teeny tiny holes, that’s a slightly complicated die. And complicated means it takes a little longer than they first thought.

Luckily, the printed ones are a little simpler (just three holes and rounded corners, not dozens and dozens and dozens of holes), so those are quicker. So instead of doing the punched ones first and the printed ones the month after, we’re going to swap the order around and do the printed ones first and the punched ones after.

No big deal, just a slight schedule shuffle! And I am officially electing not to stress out about it. Because really, I very much doubt any significant number of you are sitting at home going ‘but wait, you saaaaaaaaaid you were planning to do them the other way round, and now that you have run into (and solved) a small technical issue in a complicated production process (a process that is new to you and that you are learning about as you go along in order to make cool shit for us), I realize that you are not aaaaaaaaactually immune from delays in manufacturing, and so noooooooow I don’t like you anymore.’ And if I’m wrong about that? Well, better we find that out now. For I intend to continue to do cool, new things and thus will occasionally run into cool, new problems to solve along the way.

So again, no one needs to do anything, I’ve already got it sorted out, all that’s happening is I’m swapping the order of the next two things around to give the printers the time they need to make our nifty toys!

Summary:
  • Printed cards are going out to Notable Nonsense folks in April (instead of in May), and punched cards are gong out in May (instead of in April) because the punched ones were so damn cool they stumped the printer and we needed a little extra time.
  • Now that that’s all settled, I’ll have a post with all the details of April’s Notable Nonsense shipment up in a couple of days!
  • Notable Nonsense signups open for the first week of the month (they’re closed the rest of the time), so anyone not already on the tier who wants to play will be able to join then (they’re closed right now, but I’ll let you know when they open and remind you when they’re about to close).
