Yes, Again
Do you remember earlier this year when I fell prey to a Wee Hat obsession. Those hats went off to their intended victims long ago. I managed to arrange a photo shoot before they did, but there was an unfortunate pink lemonade incident that meant the photos weren't all they could be (the camera, after a thorough cleaning, does seem to have recovered). So that pattern sort of languished. It was in my head, but not out in the world. I thought at the time that I'd be ok with that, but it was actually sort of bugging me, so [...]
Not Quite
You'll recall that this whole star thing started as a way to make it snow. It still hasn't worked, but apparently my furnace heard about my concerns and wanted in on the act. So last night, when it was just the tiniest bit nippy outside (even if it wasn't snowing) he stopped working. Well not quite, he kept blowing air, he just stopped heating that air before blowing it on me. Very refreshing. I responded with stoicism and wool. And another star. My office windows are now full, so it's likely time to stop. I'm sure the snow will arrive [...]
Easily Amused
Huh, ok, you guys like the stars. Honestly, I'm a little surprised. I find it ever so slightly shameful that I like them (they're paper...folded paper...there should be fairly low amusement value here). I'm downright shocked that you guys do. I was expecting some folded arms and foot tapping and a little gentle prod back in the direction of the yarn. But who am I to argue? The first round of stars didn't do it (no snow yet), so now I've added a yellow one to the mix. It might be my favorite so far. I've got one more window [...]
My Misspent Youth
Earlier this week, I opened the windows in my house. Yesterday, I went to the grocery store wearing sandals. Something has to be done. It's December, it's Ohio, it should not be in the 60s. I need to make it snow. This is traditionally done by hanging either straw stars or paper stars in the windows. Now, let me back up. I'm not sure either of these things is a very traditional holiday craft in the States. But I grew up in Germany, and making both of these was always part of the season. The straw stars make a huge [...]
Toes
The Boy's sock is done. Note that's sock, not socks. He'll likely want both. I'll need to be a clever kid and take some notes while I make the second, as I think these are nifty enough to share (and they require a bit of fancy maneuvering to get things lined up just so for the toe and the heel). Next time he's around in daylight hours, I'll get a pic with a foot. But as that won't be until the weekend, I'm taking the lazy way out and using the blocker for now.
As Promised
One furry boy leg and one partially completed sock. The sock is actually about an inch longer than this now (String Theory Merino DK...it knits up wicked wicked wicked fast, and the cables are marvelously sharp), and I may even finish the first one this weekend. I was all worried that the yarn would be too busy for that much purl background (variegated yarns often look even more, um, enthusiastic on the purl side), but it's coming out great.
Christmas Shipping Deadlines
Ready for the most boring post ever? I warn you, there's nothing interesting here at all. If you want to be totally sure that your book arrives (at a U.S. address) before Christmas, you need to order it on or before December 10. I know. It stinks. If it's after that and you're desperate, get in touch with me and we can likely work something out. But if you're going for your standard no-stress, no-drama shipping, that's the deadline. International folks, I can't promise anything. The post office says it can take up to four weeks. But, the reports I've [...]
Under No Circumstances
One of the guiding rules that govern our household is 'don't dress the cats.' Yes, the kitten overlords are dedicated naturists. We tried a brief flirtation with collars, but even that ended in failure. So you may be a bit surprised when I show you this picture. Levon was certainly surprised that I interrupted his morning nap to do anything so undignified (you can see his shame). But never fear. That is absolutely positively not a kitten hat (it doesn't really suit him anyways, he prefers something a bit more classically shaped). It is, alas, a toe hat. For you [...]
Next
In between the website upgrades, the movies, and the ice cream making, the weekend saw a bit of time for some actual knitting. These are the newest sock on the needles and they will be for The Boy (he certainly deserves them after all the computer time he clocked over the last few days). The yarn is String Theory Merino DK in the color Carina. The Boy picked it out when we visited String Theory in October. The color is lovely, and just the tiniest bit odd. It looks like the yarn itself is yellow and in some spots it's [...]
