I May Have a Problem
So the ornaments? The ornaments that seem to be the knitting equivalent of crack? They are teeny tiny hats. Hats that eggs would wear if eggs were inclined to wear hats. And they are so flipping cute I may just die. Do you want to die of an overdose of cute too? I thought so. Ridiculously cute. Ridiculously easy to knit. More or less the speediest thing ever. Next up...likely mittens. These have to go in the mail Monday, so I can't make millions of them, but I think a mitten or two would round things out nicely. You want [...]
Potato Chips
To make sense of my morning, you need to know two things. First, I do not relish the thought of going to the dentist. I have a lovely dentist...skilled, accommodating, and handy with the prescription pad. But still, it is not my favorite place to go. Second, my friends have awesome children. I'm not normally a big fan of kids. Children as a class are known to be sticky, noisy, and a bit pungent. But not the children of my friends. They are all paragons of virtue, charming conversationalists, and very rarely sticky. Now you might not think that these [...]
Warm and Spiky
Two bits of good news! First, the nice man from the gas company's repair service showed up bright and early Monday morning. He looked at our furnace (an admittedly elderly piece of machinery), took a panel off, wiggled a few wires, pushed a button, and boom...heat. I felt rather like an ass for not knowing to do this myself. But I was a warm ass, so I didn't care for long. And I had remembered that we had the furnace repair program and called them instead of calling the regular repair company (who charge $80 to ring the doorbell and [...]
The Stars Did Not Align
We're actually pretty good at the short trip thing. We don't overpack (for one or two nights we just share a super tiny rolling bag). We understand the importance of snacks. We have the music situation well under control. I know all about the care and feeding of car knitting. We have a system. Usually, it just sort of works. But this weekend...this weekend we never quite found our groove. It started when we woke up on Saturday and found the furnace had given up the ghost. We have a service plan through our gas company, so we called them [...]
Less Than Stellar
You know what is not a fun way to begin your morning? With the realization that your furnace is no longer blowing warm air...is instead blowing icy cold air. This is absolutely not good. It significantly alters your plans for the day. I am displeased.
Dash
We're sneaking off to Pittsburgh for an evening over the weekend. There's a concert (shocking I know, so unlike us). Along the way we'll visit a yarn store (or two), a book store (or three), and just perhaps the odd brewery. There's a plan, and there will be a report when we return. The only thing we don't have lined up is restaurants...any suggestions? And because this is the sort of blog post that is certain to elicit the suggestion that I start using twitter...all I can say is I'm working on it. I've never been what you'd call an [...]
Wow…
Guys...I'm speechless. You've known me for a while now, and you know I don't normally suffer from a lack of words. But all I can say right now is wow. Then I sort of shake my head and blink a lot. Then I say wow again. The response to Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet has been amazing. Putting together a project like this has a certain amount of risk to it. I put in lots (and lots and lots) of time and energy, but I also write lots of checks (the photographer, the book designer, the printer, and a whole list of [...]
Curiouser and Curiouser
The Boy and I have reservations at a very nice restaurant tonight. If you've been reading a while, you might recall that I mentioned that the book writing process has surprisingly few moments where it feels like you've really reached a milestone. There are lots of concurrent steps, and just because you've finished one doesn't mean you don't have 4 other things to do. I found that distressing last time around, and I vowed to celebrate all the milestones I could with this one. And I've reached one. The website for Book the Second is officially live today. Any chance [...]
Not Productive
This weekend was not productive. I did not clean my house. I did not do my laundry. I did not proof the book. I did not write up a new pattern. I didn't even knit. I ate tasty food. I read books (fiction books...not scholarly books...an unheard of luxury). I may have even had a tiny little nap. And I played games. Lots and lots of games. Douglas approved and was happy to help. He seemed to prefer this one, as the box makes an excellent kitten nest. But fear not, there was quite a lot of actual productive work [...]
