We’ve seen this before

This project, as with oh so many projects, starts with a bit of ribbing. But before too long, you get to start doing something a bit more interesting. But first, first you need to put in your time with that ribbing.  There's just no way around it. Yarn is Squish DK by Spun Right Round in the color Spellbound, and it's yummy stuff!

Easily distracted

What can I say, I'm easily distracted.  The swatch leapt onto my needles...who was I to fight it. Some fingerless mitts (to match the cowl from earlier this year) seemed in order.  I'm sure you understand, right? I mean who can be expected to say no to that. But don't worry, they're quick.  I'll be back to the slipper some time soon!

Nearly there

Little mitts on thicker yarn have some distinct advantages.  They're cozy as can be, and done in a flash.  I'm pretty sure this took about five minutes. And this five more. And this five more. And now of course it will take me about six weeks to finish the thumb and get around to weaving in the ends...  But that's a whole separate issue and best not thought about now! I've totally loved making these, but man is it time to get something in my more customary colors on the needles.  All this brightness is starting to get to me.  [...]

One Down

Love it! I haven't woven in all the ends yet (so. many. ends.).  But I've got enough in to know it fits and is comfy.  I was worried the rolled edge would feel bulky, but it really doesn't.  I used needles one size bigger for the rolled bits, which seems counter intuitive, but totally works.  It makes the fabric a bit softer/floppier in those spots, so it doesn't bind up or feel like it's in the way. Totally worth filing away when you want the look of a rolled edge but want the fabric to stay well behaved!

Rolling

There are ways to keep the edges of your knitting from rolling, but sometimes you just need to relax and go with it.  And this is totally one of those times. I like how the rolled edge looks here.  It plays nicely with the texture in the bands, and it shows off the colors in the yarn beautifully. I'm going to have to wear it a bit to make sure it doesn't feel awkward on my thumb, but I suspect it will be just fine. What do you guys think?  Do you like rolled edges?  Or do they bug you?

Smitten

Yeah...so it is supposed to be a baby hat (that's a lie, it's sized to be a toddler/child hat, because I don't like anyone enough to knit something they'll grow out of in five minutes).  But if it were a few inches bigger around and an inch or two taller?  I'd totally rock that hat myself! And, as always, blocking takes what was generally adorable and makes it all tidy and orderly and just extra nifty in all ways. Those of you not blocking your hats are missing out on a treat, they really do deserve it! And me?  Well [...]

Any Second Now

I probably can't, in good conscience, continue to pepper you with pictures of these and their incremental growth for too much longer.  So it's a good thing they're almost done. The finished mitt has seven zigs, and the almost finished one is just at the end of zig six, so it really shouldn't be much longer at all. And of course it's grown a thumb (which will, I promise, be much more tidy after I block it).  So the next time I sit down and knit for an hour or two, they should be done! Pssst, the Phaeodaria pattern is [...]

Continue to zig and zag

Nearly done.  The sort of nearly done where could almost talk yourself into just going ahead and banging it out, but your elbow really sort of hurts, and you know if you do keep going you'll totally pay for it the next day. So it's waiting (because much as I love you all, I want to still be able to knit in five years, so I'm not going to knit when it hurts me).  But it shouldn't have to wait much longer!

One to go

Number two on the way! Does anybody else sort of do the math on how many stitches a project has and how many you've done and keep obsessive track of your progress?  Or is it too depressing?  Anyone want to guess just how many stitches are in one of those mitts?  It's way more than I thought... Oh, and just a tiny heads up.  Diluvian are coming back out Tuesday.  They're sort of a secret favorite of mine, and I'm thrilled to be bringing them back.  Be sure you're on the mailing list if you want a heads up (and [...]
