Porch Knitting
Is it wrong that I started something last night that will be simple enough to knit on the porch tonight as we hand out candy (and play-doh...really...it's a huge hit)? Is anyone else knitting while they hand out candy? Anybody got a costume planned? I must admit I don't dress up. But I DO sit on the porch and drink warm things and eat candy while judging the local costumes.

The kitten overlords have decreed that I may not use my desk chair. It has been commandeered for their nefarious purposes. They suggest checking back later to see if they're done with it, but they make no promises. Update: Shortly after posting this, the rat fink bastards devious little brats kittens upped the ante in their quest to keep me from being productive. They swarmed me, all three at once, on the tile floor. It was a choice between dropping what I had in my hands and grabbing the sink or going ass over teakettle and landing in the middle [...]
Administrative Drivel
There is absolutely no knitting to be seen. None at all. There will be some day, but not today. Instead, I come to you with two shamelessly commercial administrative announcements (which always make me feel ever so slightly sullied, so please do pardon the business side of things). First, folks have been asking for me to make the patterns from Silk Road Socks available as individual downloads. I've gotten the necessary files from the publisher to do so, and you should be able to get any of them as single patterns now. Second, we're just about out of print copies [...]
Creepy Crawlies
The hat is going to have a wee flipped up bit at the brim. I had initially planned to hold this in place with a button. But the more I play with it, the more I want the hat to be reversible. That means a button won't really work so well. A pin or a brooch would work much better. Now of course I'm happy to try and track down something cool (oh etsy, your siren song draws me in every time), but I'm also a fan of the use what you have approach. Alas, I'm not really a brooch [...]
Shows Potential
I know this still doesn't look exactly awe-inspiring. But I assure you it should be cool when it gets a bit more done. It will be all swooshes and diagonals and angles. If things go according to plan (always a big if) it should be reversible. And it might just give me an excuse to indulge my burgeoning button obsession. Of course that won't happen if I don't find some time to actually sit down and make more stitches.
Testing
The lovely gray ribbed socks I posted about a little while ago (scroll down, the pic should still be on this page) are now up for testing. If you want to make your own, swing by the testing group and volunteer.
Sock Club
You guys have heard me say all sorts of nice things about Suzan at Barking Dog Yarns. I used her yarn for Peregrinate and Foliate, and I absolutely love it. I've also used it for two of the projects for Book the Second. So when Suzan told me she was doing a sock club, I was thrilled at the chance to be part of it. And we've come up with something kind of neat. We'll be using the club shipment to preview the the sock pattern from Book the Second that uses Suzan's yarn. If you're part of the club, [...]
You Know You’re A Knitter When…
We seem to go to two different sorts of shows. There's the buy your ticket ahead of time, get an assigned seat, wear grownup clothes, sit quietly, watch attentively, applaud politely sort. Like the Tuvan throat singing concert. Very grown up. Then there's the the buy your ticket at the door, stand around for an hour drinking beer before the show, wear your jeans, hop up and down and sing along sort. Both are totally valid and plenty of fun. It is generally easier to knit at the first sort (you are sitting down and the chances that someone will [...]
Awkward
So apparently there is a knitting version of awkward adolescence. I tried to put this hat on Alphonse and show it to you that way. It just looked goofy. But I'm pretty sure it's going to look nifty once it grows up and gets a little bit taller. You'll just have to take my word for it now though. We'll pretend this is the dorky sixth grade picture of the knitting world. With any luck at all, I'll be able to show you something much cuter in a few days.
