Completely Batty
Ok, we are going to do this, and we are going to do this on speed racer mode. Because I have just completely hyperfocused on these guys for the last few days. And that means either I push through and get them out now, before the fixation wanes…or I shove them in the doom bins and 50/50 if I ever think of them again. (Yes, I know my brain. No, that doesn’t mean I’m in charge of it. But it does help me work around its stranger proclivities.)
So, we are going to do The Fastest Test Ever. As in, I’d actually love to send this out to folks today if we have enough interested folks with the supplies on hand, tomorrow if not.
Speaking of supplies, you need Two Unusual Things to make these, the peg dolls, and something to make the wings.
Wings are easy, you just need a sheet of something you can cut with scissors and that won’t fray. A sheet of vinyl or felt from the craft store is perfect. And you don’t need that until the end.
But you need the peg doll in hand when you start knitting to check the size and fit of your fabric. And I want to do these fast. So I’m looking for folks who either already have peg dolls on hand or are able to get them in the next day or two.
Mine are between 1 and 1.5 inches in diameter and between 2.5 and 4.5 inches tall. And you do want the fairly good sized ones (not the super teeny tiny ones), because otherwise there’s not really room for your stitches.
The knitting is super quick. I timed myself and even the biggest of them took less than two hours of knitting time. So I’m hoping to find folks who can finish one bat within a week of getting the pattern.
You’ll want a couple dozen yards of fingering weight yarn and small needles (plus normal knitting stuff like stitch markers and scissors and darning needles). Think sock scraps yarn and sock needles (I think I made mine on size 0 and size 1).
So…here’s how we’re going to do this. If you want to make these, leave a comment on this post on patreon (it’s public, anyone can see it) with:
- your ravelry name (I do my tests on ravelry, so you need to be ok using the forums there)
- your peg doll situation (preference on this one is absolutely going to folks who have peg dolls on hand or are able to get them in the next day or so)
- something saying you’re likely ok with finding an hour or two of knitting time for these some time over the next week (normally I do things with way more lead time, but these are literally a one sitting knit, and they’re seasonal, so I am being unusually hasty this time)
I’m going to keep an eye on the comments as they come in. Once we get to half a dozen or so folks who have the peg dolls on hand or can get them real darn quick, I’ll go ahead and get this out. Hopefully this afternoon, maybe tomorrow morning.
P.S. Don’t worry, we’ll go back to a more leisurely pace next time around. I just want to do these while the mood lasts and while they’re seasonally appropriate.
Also, don’t fret if you were in camp knitted wings. If I get these out now, there’s a very good chance I’ll do an update with a knitted version of the wings next year. But if I wait till next year to do any of it, it’s likely I’ll forget about it between now and then and not do it at all. So doing this version now increases the chance of getting an updated version with the knitted wings in the future. See above about that thing where I know how my brain works and all I can do is work around its foibles.
