Unexpected
Last Thursday, we headed over to Lakewood to see a show by Puscifer. Some of The Boy's friends from high school were in town for it. They had extra tickets and asked if we'd like to come along. Working on the theory that leaving the house and interacting with people is often more interesting than staying home in my pajamas and interacting with the cats, I went. It was...bracing. I actually liked much of the music, but some of the more, um, theatrical aspects of the show didn't appeal quite as much. I decided to take a little break in [...]
Progress
The gray socks are done and blocked. Tomorrow, if the weather and The Boy are agreeable, I'll get pictures (The Boy is generally agreeable, it's the weather that I have suspicions about). Look for the pattern some time around Tuesday of next week. Meanwhile, I'm going to do something scandalous and take the weekend off from the magical intarwebs. I have a suspicion the world will continue without me, but scientific inquiry dictates I double check just to be sure. If it turns out I was wrong and the world does end, consider me properly apologetic.
Mailing List
It's going to be a busy couple of weeks around here. The gray socks are coming out very shortly (next week if I have my way about it). Even more exciting, the website for Book the Second should be up the week after that. Somewhere along the way there may be a little post-Thanksgiving sale too. Every now and then, someone asks me how best to keep up with what's going on around here. My suggestion is to sign up for the mailing list. There's a sign up box over there on the right (just below the pictures of the [...]
Doing the Math
A tiny bit of calculation has revealed that the current pair of socks will, when finished, be made up of about 14,400 stitches. A further bit of calculation has revealed that I've got about 1,550 stitches left to go before I finish the second sock. This means I am about 89% done. Really, it's three inches and a toe. It's three hours of knitting. So why in the world is it taking me so long to do? And does anyone else figure out how many stitches are in a project and obsessively track how much you've finished?
Bodes Poorly
The universe hates me and wants me to die young. This is clear, because they have allowed an establishment called Sweetie Fry to open down the street from us. It started out as an ice cream and french fry place, which was quite dangerous enough. But now...now they've added a new and even more horrifyingly tempting item to their repertoire. Have you heard of funnel cake fries? No. I hadn't either. I knew about funnel cakes. And I knew about french fries. But I never knew about extruding funnel cake batter into french fry shaped pieces, dousing the whole thing [...]
Snow!
Apparently I've sunk to the level of using my blog to record the weather. This is doubtless shameful. But I've checked, and there are far more shameful things on the internet, so I'm letting it slide. Because people...it snowed yesterday. And I almost missed it. I...erm...like snow. Especially the first snow of the year. It gets less charming some time around February, but for now it's awesome. This snow came while I was asleep and was almost melted by the time I woke up. As such, I've made the executive decision that it's not quite the first snow. It's more [...]
Change of Plans
I was going to show you the gray sock's mate (heel just turned, coming along nicely). But for now I'll have to leave it to your imagination. I've got something much more amusing to show you. Do you remember back when I put carpet down in my side entrance? The swearing and the finger slicing? Yeah. Fun times. The carpet is still going strong and the fingers have healed. But ever since then I've been getting Flor's catalog in the mail. Normally I drop it straight in the trash. It's not that I don't like the product. I totally do. [...]
Snag
From time to time, even the nicest yarn has little slubs and snags. This is, at most, an irritation. It's much less of a problem than knots. Knots mean you've got extra ends to weave in and they can mean breaks in the color progression. Slubs often just mean a quick twist to fix. But since I've heard of folks cutting out slubs, I thought I'd show you how I fix them. This is pretty basic, but I know the last several folks I mentioned it to were gobsmacked that you could fix these things, so...I thought I'd share. [...]
Just One
We've established that patience isn't my strong suit. Not really at all. And we've established that one of the oh-so-very-nifty things about having your very own website and writing your very own books is that you can more or less do what you want. And I've also confessed that the pictures came and that I like them. Taking these three things together has led me to the conclusion that I can show you a picture if I want to. Just one for now...I want there to still be plenty of good stuff when the website is ready. But for the [...]
