Book Yarn, Part VIII

Next up is Silk Crush Sock by Sweet Georgia in Cypress.  I'm going to take a dramatic and unexpected position here and recommend you not click on those links.  Not, that is, unless you want to fritter away the next 45 minutes and who knows how many dollars in a sweaty, sticky, yarn-drenched daze. Sweet Georgia is new to me.  I'd not seen their yarn or even heard of them before I started the book project.  Then someone involved with the book sent me the link.  I don't really remember the hour or so after that.  A bit later yarn [...]

Book Yarn, Part VII

You thought I forgot, didn't you.  Or perhaps you thought I forgot my Roman numerals.  Somewhat to my surprise, I actually do remember them up through the thousands, which is really all you need.  The delay in presenting book yarn has been entirely due to other distracting things going on.  It's back now. This is Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Fjord.  Now I've not actually worked with Shepherd Sock myself.  It's a teeny tiny bit too thin for me to use comfortably.  Of course knitters vary, and this is actually a fairly classic sock weight.  Scads of people use it [...]

Book Yarn, Part VI

Today I'm showing off Three Irish Girls' lovely Kells Sport in the color Brennan.  I've not worked with this specific base before, but I have used (and very much enjoyed) their Adorn Sock in my Calcareous socks. I first found Three Irish Girls' yarns at Sock Summit.  Their combination of beautiful colors and a wide choice of base yarns was irresistible.  I knew I wanted to include a variety of yarn thicknesses in my book, and Three Irish Girls makes one of the most sock-suitable sport weight yarns I've ever found.  It can be hard to find sport weight yarn [...]

Book Yarn, Part V

Today we've got an appearance by another old favorite, Hand Maiden.  The light gray yarn on top is Bess, a merino / cashmere blend that I've not worked with before.  The darker gray yarn on the bottom is Casbah, a merino / cashmere /nylon blend I've loved for a long time.  One of my first patterns, Slant, was made from Casbah, as was Graupel, one of my more recent offerings. I have a soft spot for Hand Maiden and their sister company Fleece Artist.  When I first started knitting, I used the standard yarns available at Joann or Walmart and [...]

Book Yarn, Part IV

I've never quite managed be one of those people who are always up on the newest or coolest things.  Perhaps I'm not attentive enough or I don't try hard enough or maybe I just don't care.  I've come to terms with that, and I don't even think it's a bad thing.  Most of the time. Alas, in this case, my blithe dismissal of buzz led me to miss out on Sanguine Gryphon's Bugga for far too long.  Now that I've got some of it in my hands, I see what all the chatter has been about.  This stuff is really [...]

Book Yarn, Part III

So the last two book yarns were returns of old favorites.  That's always wonderful, and I am excited to work with them again.  That said, there's something marvelous in finding new favorites too.  (If you were a brownie in the 80s that godawful Make New Friends song might be running through your head now too.  Sorry about that.) That's what's happened here.  This is the lovely Sock Plus 8 by Handwerks in the color Paprika.  It's made of 8 tiny plies tightly twsited together resulting in marvelously smooth yarn.  The stitch definition is fantastic, and despite all those plies, it's [...]

Book Yarn, Part II

Lovely as the Schaefer yarn is, 2 skeins do not a book make.  Don't worry though, there is rather a lot more.  The second yarn to arrive was Blue Moon Fiber Arts' Mediumweight in the color In the Navy. As with the Schaefer, this is not the first time I've worked with Blue Moon.  I've used it for two pairs of socks before I started designing and two pairs since.  Ensnared, one of my first designs, was made with it as was Scatterling, one of my most recent. This is another of those yarns that is just slightly on the [...]

Book Yarn, Part I

For the last few days my mailbox has been overflowing with a steady stream of some of my favorite yarns.  You see, a week or two ago, I gathered up my courage and sent emails off to the folks who make my favorite yarns.  I told them I'm working on a book, that I love what they do, and that I was hoping to use their work in my book.  Madam Publisher was kind enough to send emails to back me up (ya know, just to prove I'm not just soliciting yarn with no intention of turning out a book).  [...]

Greatly Exaggerated

I am assuredly not dead. Busy, yes. Dead, no. Thanks to the folks who emailed to check though. I do like knowing that if I ever should be dead, someone might notice before the cats have the chance to nibble on too much of me. Hopefully The Boy would notice, but he gets busy too sometimes, so it's good to have a back up system at the ready. Busy with what you ask? Why the book of course, which explains much of my dreadful silence.  Luckily, the part of the project where all of my knitting time is focused on [...]
