Kicking
I occasionally find myself typing 'knitting' into search engines and reveling in the things that pop up. I've pulled out a few of my favorites (from the British Museum's marvelous online collection) to share this week. Bonus points to whoever leaves the best caption in comments. Oh hey look, I remember how to make them! Does anybody else make these? Or maybe any other paper-based ornaments? I confess I find it unreasonably satisfying to turn paper into something so substantial and three dimensional. Button, button who’s got the button?
I get lots of folks asking where the buttons in some of my patterns come from (Treacherous Winds and Perfectly Finished in Every Point have been the cause of most of the recent ones). The real answer is 'the basket in my closet,' but I understand that this isn't super helpful (please don't come dig through my closet, it's a mess). Meditative
This is both hideously slow and oddly meditative. Each round has a little over 100 stitches, so it takes rather a long time to click through. But at the same time, the stitch is simple enough that my hands just sort of do it on auto pilot, so I don't actually have to pay much attention. The combination makes for an oddly satisfying sort of project. I'm fairly sure it will never actually be done, but I'm enjoying the process more than I would have expected.
Chatty
Hmm, I've been remiss. I went and put out a new book, and then did some of those 'chat about the book' sorts of things you're supposed to do when you put out a new book, and sort of forgot to tell you about them. And Done
Thumbs all tidy and done! Done on the second try I might add. I very cleverly knit them on one-size-too-small needles the first time through (and only recognized it after I'd bound off thank you very much). But a quick fit of swearing and ripping took care of it and now both are done. And someday it may be cold enough to wear them!
Beginnings
Somehow, even after spending large chunks of Saturday and Sunday taking photos for Curls 2, I still wasn't quite done playing with yarn. So on Sunday evening, this happened. It's going to be a hat for The Boy, and it's made with one of the yarns I grabbed when we were up in Maine earlier this year. It's my first try at a fingering weight hat (normally I go thicker), and I'm a little worried I'll get bored somewhere in the middle and fall down and die. Prepped
This weekend is the photoshoot for Curls 2. This is ridiculously exciting, as I think all this gray is going to be amazingly fun to take photos of. I've been doing that thing where I scurry around making sure I have everything I need for days now. Of course I need all the curls themselves. I store them on a dress form to keep them from getting wrinkled after they are blocked. These are on Alethea's companion, Verity. Slouch
The second mitt is done (well, they need thumbs, but done enough to try on and admire). I'm loving how slouchy they are. I made them a bit bigger than I normally would for a cuff (no negative ease, pretty much exactly my wrist circumference), and between that and the big, deep cable they are delightfully slouchy. I mean you could keep them tugged out and straight, but left to their own devices, they will crumple up perfectly. I think it goes beautifully with the hat, which is quite slouchy too.
