Deep breath
This is one of those projects that absolutely will look like you're doing something wrong for quite some time. It eventually sorts itself out, I promise. But there's a good long while early on where you simply have to take deep breaths and trust the process.
Counting rows
So I'm working on a thing with cables every eight rows, which means I often find myself thinking huh, is it time to do the next cable yet? But counting rows on cables can be...not immediately obvious. But don't worry, there's a trick to it. As usual, the thing to do is...learn to look at your fabric. I know. I know! It's annoying. But it's the way you actually start to understand what's going on, so it's pretty much always going to be the answer. Ok, so, cables happen when you yoink one set of stitches over across some neighboring [...]
Monthly Reminder
It's been two years since the Supreme Court reminded everyone that you don't have bodily autonomy if you get pregnant. Since then, many states have made it had or impossible to get an abortion, others are doing the same, and yes, some are trying to restrict birth control and fertility treatments, too. Despite the barrage of new restrictions, the number of abortions actually went up in 2023 (by ~11% as compared to 2020). This is at least partly due to the increased availability of and awareness about abortion pills by mail. Abortion pills give people back some of the autonomy [...]
Close but…
Sigh. This is like...four or five stitches different from what it needs to be. Which means it is about to be ripped. But I'm showing it to you beforehand in case it helps with guessing what I'm making...
Next round
This...this is what's happening with the next skirt. Solid for the waist and pocket bits, wee pattern part for the rest of it. In theory, it's about two or three sewing sessions (the nebulous time frame that encompasses 'how long I can work on this before I get bored and/or sore and need to put it away). This might happen over two or three days, or it might happen over weeks or months, depending on how badly I want to wear it and how hectic the rest of life is.
And closer still
Theeeere we go, that will work nicely. Any guesses what this is for? I'm not saying until we're so far along it's totally obvious...
Closer to right
Nope. None of this will be the final product. All of this is not quite right. But it's getting me closer to right...
So I hated my pants
So a year or so ago I realized I had a bunch of sensory issues with...um...pants. What can I say, my brain is weird, I have sensory issues with lots of things. But the more I realize 'oh hey, that's a sensory thing, I can mitigate that,' the better my life gets (no really, so many of the things that got called 'anxiety' suddenly went away when I realized 'oh, hey, that scratchy shirt tag/those flickering lights/that buzzing noise is sucking all my will to live and tolerating it is requiring all my focus and attention and energy). So I [...]
Train your eye
It's become clear that some of y'all can't tell the difference between twisted and untwisted stitches (which is fine, no one is born knowing that, we all have to learn it somewhere!). And before we can talk more about the nifty decrease thing, you've got to to have a good handle on that. So let's take a look! Because you can train your eye to see them, and once you do, you'll understand what's going on with your fabric so much better. (There's a video of this over here, it's on a public post so anyone can see it.) Look [...]
