Not Happening

I was too busy doing stuff at Sock Summit to write about it.  Sorry 'bout that.  I will talk about it over the next few weeks, but in the meantime I can say with certainty that Oregon is a pretty part of the world.  See?

Packing

I'm packing for Sock Summit.  Generally I pack fairly light.  I've done enough traveling to know better than to bring things I don't need (and really you don't need as much as you think), I have a simple wardrobe, and I hate carrying things.  I'm a big fan of the carry on approach to travel.  I could fit all I'll need for this trip in a carry on if I had to. But this is Sock Summit.  I intend to bring home yarn.  Possibly a lot of yarn. So I'm taking checked luggage (half empty) with the intent of loading [...]

Twist Twist Twist

Sorry for the disappearing act.  I was off playing in the woods with The Boy and his family.  I don't, as a general rule, do woods.  The woods are traditionally in that space known as outside, and I am philosophically opposed to outside.  Outside is where the evil scorching sun lives, and his minions (itchy) plants and (creepy) bugs can cause all sorts of mayhem if you spend too much time out there.  It is much safer to stay inside with the books and the air conditioning and the refreshing beverages. The knitting is also generally found inside. I was, [...]

Loot!

Alas, poorly photographed loot, but loot none the less. So yesterday I hauled my somnolent form out of bed at 4 in the morning and somehow managed to make my way to Columbus for Knitter's Connection.  I took a class on reading Japanese patterns.  The class was well done and has cemented my determination to hunt down some Japanese stitch dictionaries (any recommendations?). Alas there were no such books available at the market, but I did get a consolation prize of sorts - a satchel of loot.  The convention bag included 7 different yarns, 2 magazines, a pattern, a book, [...]

Ferment

This past weekend featured a brief jaunt to Washington D.C. to visit Savor, an "American craft beer and food experience."  Should you ever wish to sample a hundred or so sorts of beer in the space of five hours, this is the event for you.  I am generally pro beer, but this rather taxed my limits.  Apparently my palate isn't quite sophisticated enough to appreciate all that the beer world has to offer.  Several of the selections caused me to wrinkle my nose and make amusing faces, though many were quite tasty. Perhaps more importantly, and certainly more to the [...]

Sock Summit

After much wavering, equivocating, and down right shilly shallying, I have come to a decision. I will be attending Sock Summit 2009. Eep.  I will be getting the wee pretty button later, but right now their computers seem to be a bit busy doing other things (like fending off the hordes of hopeful knitters, credit cards in one hand, sharp pointy sticks in the other). Button success.  Ahh, pretty socks.  Now, to plan the trip. Erp.  I think I must go lie down.

Baaaaaah

I went to the Great Lakes Fiber Show this weekend and displayed astonishing self restraint and admirable fiscal responsibility. I bought a mere six skeins of yarn. Quite noble. I must have been too distracted by the squee-worthy critters to engage in commerce.  Sheep are both cuter and smellier than I had realized.  Especially that smelly part. In actual knitting news, the first of the Embonpoint socks is complete, and the second will be started shortly. The pattern will be posted here, likely some time in June. I spent some time this morning taking pictures for my Knitty submission. It [...]

The Yarn Shop Next to the Brewery

The full phrase is "the yarn shop next to the brewery is open late on the night of the homebrewer's meeting." It has become our household's way of saying serendipity. I realize that the phrase 'the yarn shop next to the brewery' is much longer than the word serendipity, but secret phrases needn't be efficient. We've actually encountered several yarn shops that are brewery adjacent (boy might say breweries that are yarn shop adjacent). We tend to find them on trips, one in New York and one in Bulgaria. Perhaps more importantly, there seems to be a yarn shop next [...]
