Lickity split
Well that took no time at all. Normally I'd do several posts of progress shots just to show you how something was coming along (and assuage any concerns I was spending all my days napping), but this was knit in pretty much two sessions, so it hardly seems fair. I'm going to sneak some progress shots in just because I actually did grab them, but really just imagine the whole hat zooming together so fast it's a blur. Oh and the inside of this one is unaccountably amusing. A little too busy for me to want it to be the [...]
Theory
We have friends who make better than average children, and they've recently gone and made a new one. This gives me the perfect opportunity to test my theory that most anything you put on a baby's head will be adorable. Let's see if it extends to orange and green hats. I suspect it will...
Starburst
I have strong feelings about hat tops. Which is probably silly, as when you're wearing your hat most people can't actually see the top of your head. But the feelings persist. Which is why I'm unreasonably amused by this. I love love love a flat hat top (the secret is to decrease alarmingly fast), and this is no exception. But if you take that and add in a wee starburst of the most cheerful yarn ever (Capella in Tantrum by SpaceCadet)? I'm going to be doing a serious happy dance.
Tip Top
Hat? Hat! Fast? Unreasonably so. Amusing? More than I would ever have expected. Colorwork? Yup...and it's my first go at it, and I'm bad at it, and I still had fun. Slightly sloppy insides and all. More? Oh yes. There will both be more hats in this series and at least one more shot of this hat...the top is too damn cute not to share. Soon. Very soon.
New Skills
Bear in mind I know nothing at all about colorwork. This is the first proper project I've even sort of tried it on. But with that in mind, I really do rather like how this is coming out (I'd take it as a kindness if you'd refrain from telling me all the things I'm doing wrong...I'm just enjoying the pretty for now, I'll learn what I should be doing later). I'm starting with the wee spikes all nestled up close to one another. Then after a while they start drifting farther and farther apart. Assuming this relaxes and evens out [...]
Penchant
I believe I promised you a new hat pattern before the winter was over. And since we've just now gotten our first properly cold days and bits of snow, this seems like the perfect time to bring these out. Penchant is now available on ravelry! And yes, there are totally two versions of the hat. The whole time I was working the first one I kept thinking 'you know, if you shifted the decreases over just a tiny bit, you'd get a totally different look.' So, I did. And that one tiny change led to a whole new hat, so [...]
Boom
So the hat looked more or less like this a little while ago. Then came a quick little fit of knitting, and all of a sudden it looked like this. It's still due for a bit of a block, just to even things out and fluff it up a bit, but I'm rather taken with it. I wanted the top to do something very specific (sort of gathered, not slouchy at all, but with just a bit of extra volume up there), and it totally did what I had in mind. The trick seemed to be doing all the decreases [...]
Meditative
This is both hideously slow and oddly meditative. Each round has a little over 100 stitches, so it takes rather a long time to click through. But at the same time, the stitch is simple enough that my hands just sort of do it on auto pilot, so I don't actually have to pay much attention. The combination makes for an oddly satisfying sort of project. I'm fairly sure it will never actually be done, but I'm enjoying the process more than I would have expected.
And Done
Thumbs all tidy and done! Done on the second try I might add. I very cleverly knit them on one-size-too-small needles the first time through (and only recognized it after I'd bound off thank you very much). But a quick fit of swearing and ripping took care of it and now both are done. And someday it may be cold enough to wear them!
