Stash Dive
This should be out next week, so let's talk about yarn so you can be ready! As with most of my patterns, it's written in lots sizes and gauges, so you can use whatever yarn weight you want and fit pretty much anyone's head (mine's 24.75 inches, I'm not leaving anyone out for having a big head)! Because there are so many gauges and sizes, you don't have to try to match a particular gauge. Instead, get a fabric you like, measure its gauge, then pick from the sizes for that gauge. This always seems so much more sensible than [...]
Taken
In all fairness, I did tell you it was rather delightful. I mean it isn't done at this point! There's a good bit more to come. But I admit to being quite taken with it. As with most of the embroidered projects, part of the joy of them is how flexible they are. Here I'm using three colors (the darkest for the brim and some of the embroidery, the next lightest for the body of the hat, and the lightest for the rest of the embroidery). But you can absolutely use fewer colors (one for the body of [...]
Alarming simple
Ahem. Remember that pretty little purple hat I finished back in (mumble mumble mutter snuffle ahem) February (snuffle mumble look, it's been a busy year, ok)? The one that was almost alarmingly simple though still rather fetching? The one I said was simple for it was destined to be adorned? Yeah. That one. Well, said adornment happened. Here's how it starts...tomorrow I'll show you what happens next. But oh, oh it's rather delightful. Consider yourself warned.
Wrap Up
One last post to answer questions that came up as we talked about this! 1) The pattern is Constellate. It's not currently available, but reknitting it does indeed mean I plan to bring it back! If you want to hear when I do, you know what to do. 2) I don't know when it will be back (the yarn misadventures delayed things). My best guess is 'when the summer is winding down and it starts to feel like knitting season again.' Subjective I know, but also the best I answer I have. 3) Since this one is such a favorite, [...]
Circumspect
Someone's wondering if I couldn't just photoshop the hat back to glory. And sure, probably, more or less? In fact, I tried (this pic is heavily edited)! But I try to be circumspect in my editing, both because I'm Super Bad At It, and because I want my pictures to be a realistic version of what you can expect if you get the same yarn. Doing this much editing feels like crossing a line. I feel like saying 'I used Imaginary Yarn Company's Spiffy Base in Nifty Color' in the pattern suggests that your project will come out similar if [...]
Tidy
How about a little close up of what I mean when I say reversible! These are the two sides of the crown on Correlation. I knit the silly thing and I still have trouble convincing my brain they're the same piece of fabric! This is also a perfect time to talk a bit about weaving in your ends neatly. I confess I always try to weave mine in neatly because I find it unreasonably soothing to more or less make them disappear (at least until I need to unpick an end, at which point I curse my obsession with being [...]
Correlation & Causation
Wanna play with some nifty reversible cables? Correlation & Causation are back on both ravelry and payhip. And I mean it when I say they're reversible! And not in that 'looks the same on each side' kind of way. Oh no. These are reversible in that 'wait, are you sure that's the same piece? really? how exactly does that work?' kind of way where they look totally different on each side. Which honestly? Is super fun! Though it does lead to grave difficulty in trying to decide which side you want facing off at any given moment. And no, no [...]
Highly Subjective
Here are a couple of close ups of what I mean about the yarn going awfully fuzzy for not yet having been worn at all, the purple at the base going much more brown, the colors overall getting faded, and white spots turning up on the orange bits (you can scroll back to see earlier pictures for comparison). And look, yes, color is just downright HARD on screens. And these were taken on different days (which fundamentally means different light). But all the color in those four sinks full of bright pink water was coming from somewhere, and that somewhere [...]
What went wrong
Let's talk a bit about what went wrong with the yarn. Reminder, I won't be saying who it's by, because that would be a dick move. But I will talk about what happened because I need to get some use out of the time I spent knitting (using it for content helps with that) and because it's nice to see that everything doesn't always go right. I bought two balls of this because I'd planned to knit two versions of the hat. Before I cast on, I cut a bit off each end, soaked the bits in slightly soapy water, [...]
