Tiny Nonsense

Shiny

Yeah, yeah I know. This looks ridiculous. I'm not suggesting you walk around with this on your hat! But I did want to show just how much of a difference it can make if you work with different materials. From left to right these are: - the same yarn the hat's knit in, just in a different color (that's Little Skein Anne's awesome harvest sport base) - silk embroidery floss, held double - fluffy silk and mohair laceweight, held double - one strand of silk embroidery floss and one strand of the fluffy laceweight They all work (and all look [...]

Not the worst reason

I mean yes, the quail eggs I found for sale on the side of the road are at least partially responsible for deciding to bring this back out. But really, that is not the worst or the strangest reason I've ever done something like this. So I can't bring myself to fret too much... (Standard disclaimers go here...do not mess with real birds' nests or with wild birds' eggs. One, because that's mean to the birds, don't be mean. Two, because there are all sorts of excitingly nasty diseases you can get from birds and no one needs that, especially [...]

Hatched

Ok so yes, we do not normally do this on weekends. But I heard some of you might be on a bit of a deadline for filling Easter baskets, and I have a bit of Life Stuff going on early next week, so I thought perhaps no one would mind if this came out today instead. Hatched is out on both ravelry and payhip. The pattern includes the nest (which you can totally make as a little drawstring pouch and fill with the candy of your choice) and the eggs, and it's 10% off for the first few days the [...]

Silly but useful

Things that look silly but are useful, take two! So in addition to changing up what you embroider with, you can also play with the size of your stitches. This shows what it looks like if you work over a column of slipped/twisted stitches (left) and what it looks like if you work your stitches at different spacings (right). Because I mean who doesn't want options! As usual, should you be gripped by a sudden urge to know more, wander over here.

Madewell’s response

After I posted about mending the terribly made Madewell sweater on twitter, I got an automated response from Madewell's customer service twitter account asking for more info. I've been generally reluctant to reach out to them (you can look back on some of the other posts about this process for more on why), but I figured since they reached out to me, I'd answer (again, you can see more of this on instagram). They asked for my order info, so here's what I sent (with my order number and email address redacted): Ok, since you asked, the order number is [...]

So about those sweaters…

So I heard from Madewell about the sweaters I've spent all winter mending! And I totally want to show you what they had to say...but first, let's check in on the sweaters (you can see a video version of this on instagram if you want to see some of this in more detail). I bought these four sweaters from Madewell in the fall of 20222. By the spring of 2023, every single one was in tatters. Let's run through them. I first showed you the green one in January. It's the one that was unbelievably covered in pills after just [...]

March Housekeeping

I'm trying to get in the habit of doing a little housekeeping post once a month. The theory is that it will give me a place to run down what's going away, what's coming next, and what's in progress. Plus show off a little non-knitting something or other because we cannot live on yarn alone. This month that's hot chocolate paste. Aka how to do a bit of work now (when you have the brain power to stand over the stove and tend to something for a few minutes) and then have access to the good hot chocolate as needed [...]
