Countdown 23
Fine Things for Plain Occasions is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN. Every once in a great long while you get a chance to do something exactly how you want with absolutely no thought for whether anyone else will be as amused by it as you are. That's what this book was for me. Knitting patterns inspired by vintage etiquette books? Yup! Hardback book with a freaking ribbon bookmark because your inner six year old knows that ribbon bookmarks marks are the best thing in the world? Of course! Photos taken on a [...]

Silk Road Socks is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN. This is where it started. Well, sort of. Silk Road Socks was my very first book, many many years ago. But I published it with someone else (mostly because I didn't realize publishing books all by yourself was something a person could actually do, and I certainly not something I could actually do). And as I have always had more opinions than sense and I do not play well with others, I was never quite happy with the first version of the book. It [...]

All three Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet books are on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN (it works for any or all of the books, just put whatever you want in your cart at once if you want more than one of them). These were my first books. Well, these were the first books I published myself. The first ones where I said, "look, if I'm going to do this thing, I'm going to do it...all of it." And I will forever have a soft spot for them. I mean yes, I do wish I'd been [...]

Firmament is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN. That thing? That thing where you played with a nifty technique for one pattern, but you're serious not done with it, so then you make another pattern. And another. And another. And then you're still not done so you sort of secretly come up with variations for each of those patterns and sneak them in all quiet like hoping maybe no one will notice. Yeah...this book is what happens when you do that thing. It started with one simple little hat, but good grief it [...]

When I mentioned on instagram that I will almost certainly not be doing a pattern for this hat (because this color is flat out impossible to photograph well and I don't wanna), a couple of folks asked why I bothered to show it at all then. The answer is mostly 'coming up with a constant stream of stuff to cram into the gaping maw of the internet content machine is surprisingly tricky.' No, really. I try and post between 7 and 14 different things to instagram every week (plus blog posts, plus tweets, plus pins when I'm clever enough to [...]

Shoreland Socks is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN. This is my most recent book...and it's almost certainly my last book for a while. I've done at least one book a year, every year, since 2011. Taking away that structure this year felt really odd (a book takes about a year to create, and for the last nine years I mostly measured time by which book I was planning, writing, releasing, or promoting at any given time). Given the Series of Exciting Global Catastrophes that 2020 brought, it was probably really good that [...]
Content note
And so it begins! Just a heads up, this is going to be one of the very very few things I knit where I don't do a pattern. This color is flat out impossible for me to photograph consistently or accurately. Taking pattern photos of a project made with this yarn would be a constant headache, and I don't want to do it. Now, it is Just Barely Possible that I'll love the pattern well enough that I want to knit it (or more likely, something related to it but not identical) again at some point in a [...]

Tacit is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN. Somehow I've gotten out of the habit of doing stand alone mitts. Not out of the habit of knitting mitts you understand. I've got piles of them (literal piles, by the back door and by my desk for when my hands get cold while I'm typing and in my coat pockets and in the back seat of the car and probably somewhere else I'm not remembering). But lately I've been doing hat and mitt sets (because matching my hat to my mitts is about the [...]
Once again, for anyone late to the party
Here is your occasional reminder that doing the long-tailed cast on over two needles is fine! Not mandatory, not forbidden, but fine. The trick is knowing why you would want to do it and only doing it when it's appropriate. Casting on over two needles does not make your caston stretchier or looser. To do that either pick a cast on that has more stretch (you can google 'stretchy cast on' and experiment with different options to see what you like best), or leave more space between the stitches of your long-tailed cast on. But casting on over two needles [...]
