Tiny Nonsense

You were warned…

I warned you we were going to talk about pompoms this week.  I fully realize that this is ridiculous.  There are actual problems in this world and the last thing we should be spending time on is fluffy yarn balls.  And yet...somehow here I am...full of opinions about pompoms.  Perhaps it's a distraction technique. Alright, first things first, I really like working with a pompom maker.  You can technically do it without (something about forks or circles of cardboard or even your fingers), but I've never been able to make a pompom I like that way.  So given that I make [...]

The inadvertent hat

So this hat wasn't supposed to be a thing.  The plan I had originally was 'I want to write every single thing I have to say about pompoms down in one place and be done with it.'  But then it turned out that, in order to put something on ravelry, it sort of has to be a proper pattern (you know, one that actually results in a knitted or crocheted thing at the end), and pompoms don't count. So I figured I'd just do a plain as can be hat...you know, cast on...knit for a while...decrease for a while...done and call [...]

Darn

So The Boy knocked on my office door, brow furrowed, injured socks in hand.  Now these socks are old...like nearly ten years old.  And they've already been mended once.  But they are still in surprisingly good shape, and I'd much rather darn them than knit a whole new pair.  So I fixed them. For a hole like this I need a couple of locking stitch markers (I use these (as always, amazon links are affiliate links), love them to bits) and a tiny crochet hook (I have this set, which comes in handy more than you might think for someone who [...]

And now for the fun bits

I mean...I did swatch this out before hand to be safe...I suspected it would work out just fine. But there's something about seeing it in its proper form that's just more satisfying. Because really...this is so much more fun than it has any right to be. Like I should be ashamed of myself.  I'm not.  Because me feeling unseemly amounts of glee over my own knitting hurts absolutely no one.  But I should be.

Incise

Incise is out on ravelry (and you'll find info about the introductory discounts on the ravelry page). You know that thing where you just sort of don't know when to stop?  Yeah, that's very much my thing!  I may possibly have invented that thing.  This all started when I got distracted by just how awesome slip stitch patterns are.  With just knits, purls, and slipped stitches you can make a seemingly endless variety of fabrics...all while only ever using one color per round (because blast it all...proper colorwork still feels hard to me). So I indulged myself in that for [...]

Needles…so many needles

So, people ask, so let's talk a bit about long dpns. I haven't yet found a perfect source for them (translation, I buy them where I can and hoard them like a greedy dragon). My very favorite ones are some bamboo needles I found at Daiso in San Francisco about six years ago. I've looked for more every time I've been back, but without any luck. But if you live near one, by all means look.⁣ I've also got some wooden ones from a vendor I won't name that I thought would be great, but they ended up being so [...]

Downright stoic

I'm going to display unusual stoicism.  I'm going to zip through this brim with shocking speed and good cheer. Some of it is that the yarn is nice and thick (SpaceCadet, Capella, it's yummy). Some of it is that I'm not doing a folded brim. And some of it is that I have a whack of bright pink yarn all prepped and ready and taunting me in the distance, and I don't get to use it until the brim is done. And between them, those three combine to get me through this in record time!

Prep

So...before I can jump in on the next hat, I need to do a tiny bit of prep. We're just all going to go along with the idea that this is a totally normal and reasonable step, and absolutely the sort of thing a sane person does.  Ok?  Ok. And I just won't mention how it was actually kind of fun to do once I got in the rhythm of it.

Home stretch

Ok, so we're going to run out of days before we run out of hats... I mean don't worry, the hats are all done and ready to go.  But I try not to post on here every day (because really...you'll get quite sick of me), so we're going speed this one up a bit. Let's pretend it went from that up there to this right here in the blink of an eye!  I'm going to assume you can more or less imagine that there was a middle stage there in between where it was shorter and just leave that as [...]
