Tiny Nonsense

Temptation

So this awesome thing happens when you've got a few books and a whole bunch of patterns under your belt.  You start to have a magic list in the back of your head of who does the best yarn.  You know, the places you are sure will always always always have something beautiful to tempt you with.  Hazel Knits is totally on that list (and this is not the first time I've fallen prey to their goodies). I've got two of their little treasures to play with for next year's book.  This is their divine in Braeburn. And this is [...]

That will do nicely

You know that's teeny tiny, right? Yes, I do, and I'm also pretty sure it's the highest joy to stitch count ratio of any project ever. And you know  not everyone is as fascinated with flared cuffs as you are, right? Nonsense. And even if it were true, the only way to help them learn is through constant exposure. So it's probably best to just back away quietly and let you knit the second one isn't it? Now you're learning...

Unabashed

I should have stopped being amused by this combination about half way through the hat.  I did not.  I remain completely and unapologetically amused and delighted. I'll let you know if the fascination wanes (or, more likely, if the yarn runs out).  But for now, I'll be over here doing this.

I get all the best mail

So there's this thing where I have an idea, then I talk to some of my very favorite yarn makers, then they send me yarn, then I play with it.  I believe technically it's called 'my job,' but really it feels like way too much fun to be a job. Two of the latest yarns to arrive (they're for next year's book) are from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. The first is Yaksi Fingering in Poupon (tell me I'm not the only one to be amused by yak...that's just nifty). And the next is Socks that Rock Mediumweight in A Hazy [...]

Hat of Infinite Happiness

Right, so you know how pretty much all knitting is lovely and fun and a good thing? But then there's some knitting that is just Your Personal Perfect Knitting?  Yeah, so this is mine. The top is just the way I like the tops of my hats to be (flat, which leads to a tiny bit of pouf but not unseemly amounts of slouch). It fits my (giant melon of a) head just right, with just the right amount of brim but not too much (a tricky dance, and one no store bought hat ever manages). And the colors.  Oh [...]

A hat in slow motion

If you wandered over from pinterest and are looking for the pattern, it's called Pelagic and it's out on ravelry! First things first, you've got to put your time in on the band.  There's no way around it. But then you get to play. I'm pretty sure this is exactly the right thing to do with that yarn you bought in an effort to be more colorful, but then you realized you are secretly a little scared of too much color, and so you tucked it away in the back corner of your stash where it couldn't give your other [...]

Lickity split

Well that took no time at all.  Normally I'd do several posts of progress shots just to show you how something was coming along (and assuage any concerns I was spending all my days napping), but this was knit in pretty much two sessions, so it hardly seems fair.  I'm going to sneak some progress shots in just because I actually did grab them, but really just imagine the whole hat zooming together so fast it's a blur. Oh and the inside of this one is unaccountably amusing.  A little too busy for me to want it to be the [...]

Magic

So the cowl grew and grew and grew. And then at some point, it was done.  Bound off, flippy as all get out (as you'd expect from stockinette), and ready for a soak. And here's where the magic happened.  I soaked it, squeezed it out, and flopped it on my desk.  No pins.  No wires.  No tension at all.  Just soak and plop (it will get a more formal blocking later, I was just testing a theory).  And look at that. It laid down flat.  Not a bit less flippy, not more or less ok, but flat.   Now part [...]

More of a good thing

Back in February I went on a little stroll down memory lane about the first of the Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet books.  It was sort of awesome to go back and spend some time with it, and so I thought I'd make some time to talk about the other two books in that series too.  I'll start with Volume II today, and we'll chat about Volume III later in the year. Just like last time, I've gone ahead and put both the paper book and the electronic book on sale for 25% off and made the individual patterns available on ravelry [...]
