You’ll just have to trust me
So some things are awfully hard to photograph. The difference in texture between the pre & post blocking version of this yarn is one of them. Part of that's my fault (I didn't take a picture of the actual swatch before I soaked it, so you can't quite compare like with like just yet), but part of it is just yarn magic and not to be questioned. It looks like this before blocking. Pay special attention to the stretches of stockinette. See how there is a good bit of space between the stitches and between the legs of each stitch? But [...]
Faith
We're in the 'wait, what's going on here? Are you sure this is right?' stage of the project. But if my swatches can be trusted (and they usually can), this is going to be marvelous in a few more rounds. We're going to have to talk about yarn floofiness soon (that thing some magic yarns do where they puff up and become even more cohesive after blocking). This yarn has exceptional floofiness, and it's a topic that needs to be explored. But first, a few more rounds... Oh, and if you're wondering, the yarn is Blend 1 from Ysolda. Which [...]
Neeeeext
So, now that Curls 2 is off to the printer (did I tell you guys about that? We should talk about that, look for more shortly!), it's time to start on next year's book. Now next year's book is a little different than most. We'll talk about it at length over the next year or so I'm sure. But for now? For now I just want to show off some yarn! Those are two beauties from Seven Sisters Arts (that's Karen Grover's company, formerly of String Theory, so you know everything is going to be amazing). The greeny gold one [...]
Anticlastic
Don’t tell anyone, but I sometimes wish it were socially acceptable to carry around a blanket. I realize that’s not generally encouraged for adults, but still the urge persists. Anticlastic may well be my attempt to pull that blanket thing off in a slightly more socially acceptable form! There are two versions of the cowl in the pattern, a taller one (above) and a shorter one (below), so you can pick just how much protection from the world you need on any given day. They each come in four sizes, and each has a clever taper built right into the [...]
Acquisitions
Sometimes you need goodies. Could be yarn goodies. Could be tool goodies. Could be something else equally fun. But really, every now and then you do need a treat.
Better
Well lookie there. The power of a little (gentle) public motivation is pretty impressive. Toes. Two of them. Ends all woven in and blocked and everything! We'll just sort of ignore how one toe is distinctly red and the other distinctly purple. That's just the sort of thing that happens from time to time. Instead we'll focus on Lovely New Socks for the sock basket. And, since the pattern is already out, I get the unspeakable luxury of just wearing them, right away, rather than carefully setting them aside until I can manage photos. I may have to just wear [...]
Languish
It's time to finish these up. Well no. It's been time to finish them up for about nine months now. I got this yarn last May, cast on more or less right away, knit one sock with all good speed, knit part of the next sock, wrote the pattern, got it out (with the help of some super duper sample knitters), and then let the half finished second sock sit in the knitting basket for an age. The last sign I can find of it on the blog is July. Well this weekend I picked it up, banged out 30 [...]
Themes
Apparently it's all cables all the time around here. What can I say, they're just nifty. I can't really help myself. Let's do a little run down of cabled things due out over the next year or so (let's also pretend there's a giant, flashing, obnoxiously insistent asterisk right here pointing you to a big disclaimer about how none of these dates are at all set in stone, and you should absolutely expect them to wiggle about a bit). The zig zag mitts (which written and off with testers right now, probably coming out this summer). The slippers (I'm working [...]
Stubborn
Remember the Alarmingly Perky Yarn from the other day? Well we had a little trial run. It had some rather strong opinions, and so our first go didn't quite work out. But version two is on the needles already, and things are going much more smoothly this time around. I'll need to bang out a few dozen more rows to be sure I like where it's going, but I'm pretty sure it will work. Anything too intricate fights with the yarn, so I'm keeping this super simple, but sometimes that's just the ticket. I've just got to put in the [...]
