Unexpectedly Prompt

Every now and then, just to keep you on your toes, things happen off schedule. Things like the printer sending your book to you.  Now usually...usually things get delayed and you have to bang your head against the wall and wail and wonder why the universe is taunting you. But occasionally, it works the other way.  Occasionally, things come early.  That's what has happened here. The latest mini book is arriving from the printer early.  Quite early in fact.  So early that I get to spend this weekend getting the website set up and doing all the background machinations necessary [...]

Shrub, Part II

When last we left our bowls of fruit, they were dry and covered in a heavy coating of sugar.  A day and a half on the counter, and they'd thrown off huge amounts of juice.  Nearly unbelievable amounts of juice.  Let's compare. Plums, yesterday: Plums today: Pears yesterday: Pears today: That's good though, that's exactly what we want them to do.  I'm not quite sure how that works (if forced to guess I'd say something about osmotic pressure and sugar and cell walls, but chemistry was a long time ago and was shamefully lacking in plums). Now, the stuff in [...]

Shrub, Part I

The internet is a dangerous place.  On the internet, you can be going along, minding your own business, when suddenly you stumble across a recipe for a plum shrub cocktail.  That's going to change the course of your day right there.  Especially if you then find yourself falling down a rabbit hole of shrub theory and practice and are the type to conduct the occasional science experiment in your kitchen. So the gist, for those of you new to shrubs, is that they're a fruit syrup vinegar concoction.  They go in drinks (alcoholic or not) and have a delicious fruity/sweet/tart [...]

Dummy

No, no I am not calling you names.  You, dear readers, are all unusually clever (and might I mention astonishing attractive).  I just want to talk to you about dummies. Dummies are blank books made up by the printer in the dimensions/page count/paper type you're considering for a book.  So these here are the two sizes I'm considering for the current sneakypants project (and yes, those are all sneakypants samples, because the books looked way too plain by themselves...no, you may not see them up close yet).  I didn't know these things even existed until I started doing books.  But [...]

Shocking

Hey, look, a sock.  We haven't seen one of those around here in a while. I realized the other day I was feeling a little crazy around the edges – a little crazier than usual.  Now I like to think I'm some sort of complicated, mysterious being with a finely tuned set of needs and desires....not the sort of creature who could be entertained by using a series of 6,000 tiny loops to make a tube with a bend in the middle.  As it turns out though, I totally am that easily entertained.  Making that tube is unreasonably satisfying.  I [...]

Dream Big (Plus Giveaway)

So just to recap, way back in March I introduced you to the amazing Dreaming of Shetland project in support of Deb Robson's work.  Then, in August, the first installment of the book came out and I talked a bit more about the project itself.  Now, I'm happy to say, the installment with my project in it is out! I can't tell you how delighted I am by this book.  It is a beautiful example of the fiber community coming together to support one of our own.  You know how you have that sneaking suspicion that knitters really are pretty [...]

Knitty Pattern, Plus Sale!

Having a pattern in knitty is a funny thing.  You spend a long time knowing it's coming (but not being allowed to talk about it), you know it will be great fun, but you never know quiiiiite when it will happen.  That's the state I was in for the last several weeks, but after yesterday, the waiting is officially over.  May I present Deflect. These were actually my dad's birthday socks last year.  I finished them while The Boy and I were in Maine in October, and then shamelessly pressed The Boy into modeling them for a little photo shoot [...]

Math…please don’t be scared

There I sat, admiring my swatch.  Loving it really.  The drape, the gauge, the yarn, the color, all was well.  Look at that red thing (details of said swatch intentionally and shamelessly obscured in the interest of secrecy preservation). It's Blue Sky Alpacas' Alpaca Silk in Crabapple and it's filling me with glee.  The other thing it was filling me was doubt.  Had I let my swatching fever take too strong a hold?  Was I going to run out of yarn because I'd knit such a nice big swatch?  I'm a swatch keeper.  I'll rip them out if I have [...]

In The Grip

I got the nicest note from someone the other day saying they were sorry I wasn't knitting much these days.  I had to do a bit of a double take.  I sort of feel like I've been knitting like a mad woman.  That cramp in my neck and the twinge just above my right elbow also seem to indicate that I've been knitting rather a lot. What I've not been doing is showing you my knitting.  That is in large part because most of what I'm knitting at the moment is swatches.  Piles and piles and piles of swatches.  See?  [...]
