Straight Lines
Zip zoom zowie. I swear that took no time at all. It took no time, and holy smokes is it cute, especially after a bit of a block. See? The yarn is Space Cadet Creations' Ester, and it is a delight to work with. It's a little skinnier than what I like for socks (my fondness for fat sock yarn is well documented), but it's lovely for projects like this. I've got the second one on the needles now and should be done with it soon. Then it's just a matter of sweet talking someone into modeling them for me [...]
Redux
I'm in an instant gratification mood. Hence the wee tiny cuff (if I'd been a smart kid and not picked the wrong needles to start, I would have finished this yesterday, as it stands, I'll finish it today). That's Space Cadet Creations Ester in one of the Mini-Skein Club colors. And if you've been here for a very long time and have an alarmingly good memory, you may recognize the pattern as a very old one of mine, Colophon. That is not an accident. You see, one of my big (alarmingly big...possibly verging into the realm of daunting) projects this [...]
Quiescent
Quiescent: adjective marked by inactivity or rest The slipper pattern is out, and you can find it over on ravelry, should you feel the need to make yourself a pair! Oh, and on the off chance kittens aren't your thing, I do have the odd pic or two with no kitten. Let's see, perhaps this one will show off the knitting without the distracting influence of a Furry Overlord. Or maybe this one. I swear that ribbing makes even my (shamefully flat) feet look all curvy and graceful. Imagine what it will do for your lovely feet! These are made [...]
Assistance
The morning had one goal. Now it's not exactly a small goal, but it was something that could reasonably be accomplished if I was diligent. The goal was pictures. Pictures of the slippers, pictures of a technique I want I want to talk to you guys about, and pictures of our newest housemate. I started with pictures of the slippers. I got some snugly blankets, set everything up all tidy, and laid down the slippers. I turned to grab the camera and, when I turned back, there was Barry. Which made it more or less impossible to get just the [...]
Present
Last week, after finally convincing myself that it was really really really ready to go, I sent KCC3 off to the printer. This is always the point where I start to get a bit queasy. It's the combination of knowing that any mistakes I've made are now destined for immortality and the act of writing a very large check. The combo is not reassuring. So I gave myself Friday off and headed out to secure a bit of a present. I'll make proper introductions soon. But for now, I feel I can safely say I'm in love, and I'm not [...]
Yearly
The time has come (a bit late this year, I confess) for The Annual Preserving of the Lemons. I won't recap the directions (I did that last year, should you want to make your own). I'll just flaunt the results. That's all the meyer lemons I was able to scrounge at the store (I've switched to quart jars instead of pint jars this year, so that's actually about 9 lemons per jar). I'd like to lay down another jar or two, but that will require another trip to the other grocery store to see if they've got the right sort [...]
True Love
Barry is a helpful and trustworthy kitten not normally prone to fits of yarn abuse. After I'd carefully laid out the rainbow of yarns to take the picture I showed you last time, he sauntered over to see if he could be of any assistance. I informed him I had the situation well under control and graciously sent him on his way. I looked back a moment later to find he'd stretched himself out next to the rainbow and carefully pulled out his very favorite yarn in the whole world. Out of the 56 yarns in the pile, he went [...]
Rainbow
Aww, you guys are very kind. Thank you for all the lovely comments on the anniversary post. I still can't quite believe I get to do this for my real live grownup job. Now that KCC3 is just about to head off to the printer, I find myself wanting to do something fun to commemorate the series being finished. I have all the little yarn samples I used for the Book Yarn posts (which I will be writing for KCC3 soon, don't worry, I haven't forgotten) so I got them all out and started playing with them. There may well [...]
Five years in
Five years ago, with very little in the way of a proper plan, I flung this website up as a place to host my first attempt at a sock pattern. One year later, I had a book contract. A year after that, Silk Road Socks was out. A year after that, I'd taken the plunge into self publishing, and KCC1 was off at the printer. A year ago, KCC2 was headed to the printer, and I'd abandoned those silly ideas about being a historian and had settled properly into the idea that this was my job. Today, five years in, [...]
