Yearly
The time has come (a bit late this year, I confess) for The Annual Preserving of the Lemons. I won't recap the directions (I did that last year, should you want to make your own). I'll just flaunt the results. That's all the meyer lemons I was able to scrounge at the store (I've switched to quart jars instead of pint jars this year, so that's actually about 9 lemons per jar). I'd like to lay down another jar or two, but that will require another trip to the other grocery store to see if they've got the right sort [...]
True Love
Barry is a helpful and trustworthy kitten not normally prone to fits of yarn abuse. After I'd carefully laid out the rainbow of yarns to take the picture I showed you last time, he sauntered over to see if he could be of any assistance. I informed him I had the situation well under control and graciously sent him on his way. I looked back a moment later to find he'd stretched himself out next to the rainbow and carefully pulled out his very favorite yarn in the whole world. Out of the 56 yarns in the pile, he went [...]
Rainbow
Aww, you guys are very kind. Thank you for all the lovely comments on the anniversary post. I still can't quite believe I get to do this for my real live grownup job. Now that KCC3 is just about to head off to the printer, I find myself wanting to do something fun to commemorate the series being finished. I have all the little yarn samples I used for the Book Yarn posts (which I will be writing for KCC3 soon, don't worry, I haven't forgotten) so I got them all out and started playing with them. There may well [...]
Five years in
Five years ago, with very little in the way of a proper plan, I flung this website up as a place to host my first attempt at a sock pattern. One year later, I had a book contract. A year after that, Silk Road Socks was out. A year after that, I'd taken the plunge into self publishing, and KCC1 was off at the printer. A year ago, KCC2 was headed to the printer, and I'd abandoned those silly ideas about being a historian and had settled properly into the idea that this was my job. Today, five years in, [...]
Assistance
I don't believe in rushing. I'm firmly convinced that when you rush, you make stupid mistakes. If you feel like you should hurry, it's probably actually time to slow down and take a breath. Which is why, despite the rather frantic pace of the last few days (as explained by the last post), I decided I wanted to whip the current project off the needles to double check that I liked how it was coming together. I'm actually a big fan of this technique. There is (generally) no reason not to put your knitting on some waste yarn, pitch it [...]
Opportune
You know how sometimes an opportunity sneaks up and pounces, all bright and shining and obvious, and you have no choice but to seize it? Right. That's not what's happened here. Instead, the faintest glimmer of an interesting opportunity has twinkled, dimly, off in the distance. It's the sort of thing that could be seriously nifty, but would require me to bust a fairly epic move to take advantage of it. And of course it hasn't come with anything like a firm timeline or even a guarantee of coming fully into existence. Because that would be too easy. That's what [...]

The mitts (the ones meant to match The Boy's new hat) are done. Now, because The Boy has a deeply unreasonable lack of love for woolly mitts, these are not for him. They are for me. Definitely his loss. P.S. These are up for testing over here if you're itching to get them on your needles right this minute!
Scribble
I am not known for my patience. I do not enjoy waiting, and I do not do it well. So the less said about the time between when I heard about the sharpie and alcohol thing (Friday afternoon) and when I actually got some markers and started scribbling (Saturday afternoon) the better. The Boy was napping, I was impatient, I figured I'd experiment. Now, there were a few flaws with my experimental setup. First, I didn't actually have any terribly suitable fabric. The only thing I had that even came close was a scrap of linen left over from the [...]
Inside out or Outside in
As promised, a quick look at both sides of the stitch on the mitts. The one on the left is what we've been calling side B, and on the right is side A. The finished mitt has been blocked, so I've stretched the partial one over a bit of cardboard to give a better sense of what side A will look like once it's blocked too. I continue to be pleased with them. I think I may have to play more with reversible cables (hint, the answer is ribbing).
