More Like It

I've recovered from my lying swatch incident (never a pretty sight) and am now no longer despondent.  The yarn is back on the needles, and I have a plan. This will be one of those slouchy hats...aka, one of those hats that looks like crap while it's in progress.  I've got great faith though.  I think it will be suitably nifty, and it's totally doing its job and showing off the (little tiny bit of) handspun I had available.  The real question is do I like the inside or the outside better? What do you think, here's the outside(maybe): And [...]

I Protest

When you don't swatch, or when you do a crappy swatch, or when your swatch proves to be a bald-faced liar (that's what happened here), then you get to rip out the promising start of a hat (while swearing), detangle all that yarn (still swearing), pick up all the stitches that survived the purge (more swearing), and knit it all over.  This time with the right size of needle. And maybe with a refreshing and restorative beverage. Here's the bundle of lying crap.  The new and improved version will be coming up next.  Or, if it doesn't continue to improve, [...]

And Then Onward

When last I left you, we had just fled left Rhinebeck.  We were in great need of some lunch.  We had secured the required apple cider donuts while we were at the fair, but the food vendors had alarmingly lengthy lines.  I could not be convinced to stand in line that long for yarn, I certainly wasn't going to do it for food.  Instead we drove into town and went to Terrapin. Thus restored, we ventured on to Tuthilltown Spirits.  The Boy had long wanted to visit, and none of our previous jaunts to New York had taken us close [...]

Round and Round

While I was sitting home watching the hurricane, the lovely Kathreen, mastermind behind the always delightful Whipup, put up a little tutorial I'd written for her a few weeks ago.  I was a shamefully bad blogger and totally forgot to tell you guys (I wish I could blame something dramatic like downed trees or power outages, but it really was just me being inattentive).  It's an explanation of how to swatch in the round, which is a handy little trick that anyone who knits in the round should have up their sleeve.  Head over and give it a look before [...]

Rabble Rousers Update

I debated whether I should write this post.  It feels just the tiniest bit shady.  My natural inclination is to post mostly shiny new yarn finds, pretty knitting projects, accounts of various misguided adventures, and the odd kitten exploit here or there.  Anything that veers even slightly into marketing sort of makes me feel fluttery in the tummy.  But the truth is, there is a business aspect to this place, and every now and then, business-y stuff comes up.  This is one of those times, and I have something some of you may want to know. I'm starting to run [...]

Rhinebeck Report

I'll preface this by saying I'm a bad blogger.  A very very bad blogger.  I took no Rhinebeck pictures.  Not one.  If you are looking for sheep-y yarn-y pics, go check out someone more diligent.  I my defense I can only say it was my first Rhinebeck and I was in a daze of wool fumes.  I'll have to settle for a written report (plus a stash enhancement pic). We were rolling Rhinebeck in with a larger vacation, so we spent Thursday implementing a masterful car packing plan and delivering the Kitten Overlords to The Boy's parents (saints I tell [...]

Look, Stitches

Because it's been an alarmingly long time since I showed you new knitting, I thought I'd just pop in here and throw up a pic of some upcoming socks.  These have been finished for an age (so I suppose they're only sort of new knitting), but I hadn't had time to write the pattern or get a photo.  So I popped them in the suitcase and took them with us to Maine. I'm sort of loving them, even if I do look frightfully pale.  As soon as I have a few consecutive free hours, I'll get the pattern written and [...]

Scattered

Hi all, you'll have to pardon me if things are a bit scattered for a day or two.  We're back from our trip.  We went up to Rhinebeck, and then on to Maine for a bit of a vacation.  We had planned to wind our way back slowly and arrive home Wednesday evening, but there's a bit of a storm at the moment.  We made the executive decision that all the places we'd be seeing on our way home were likely to be a bit damp and windy, so we opted to dash home instead.  After two very long, very [...]

Book Yarn, Part V

Next on the list, The Plucky Knitter. I first encountered Plucky Knitter yarns at Sock Summit.  I fell for them immediately, and I fell hard.  I may possibly have walked to the register cradling the yarn in my arms, as there was too much of it to simply hold in my hands.  Part of that purchase got turned into Whippersnappers within just a few months.  Plucky yarns can be a little tricky to get, but I assure you they're well worth the effort! On the right is Plucky Feet in Sticky Toffee.  This is a 4 ply, 90% merino 10% [...]
