One Down
The Tumult cowl is off the needles and blocked. I finished it up on the drive home from Maryland Sheep & Wool. It's lovely and light and lacy. It will look splendid on an actual human. It looks less than splendid when laying on my back porch railing. Alas, I'm not skilled enough (or perhaps it's brave enough) to take a picture of it on myself. You'll have to make do with this for now. I promise pretty pics when I next get a willing victim to play model!
As Advertised
Maryland Sheep & Wool had, not surprisingly, a large number of sheep and other wooly things. We found wee baby goats: Curly horned sheep (do the horns mean they're boys? Are boy sheep really rams, like how boy cows aren't so much cows as bulls or steer?): Sheep getting haircuts: And sheep with the post trim dreads (very styling): Plus the odd llama and rabbit and other furry friend. Very cute. Very smelly. Very noisy.
Expeditionary Force
The Violently Domestic Expeditionary Force has gotten word of a large wool deposit in Maryland. They've been dispatched to gather intelligence (and likely yarn). They'll report back shortly with full details. Maybe also with some sort of tasty cheese. There could also be a lamb burger involved, but that just seems a bit mean. We won't speak of it. Any one else sending scouts?
Really Truly
Once in a while, I get a message from someone saying their hat or sock or mitt ended up a surprising size. I know how disappointing this can be, and I always feel bad for folks when this happens. I usually write back and ask if they got gauge when they swatched. Nine times out of ten, they didn't swatch. Now I know swatching can feel like a waste of time. I totally understand the urge to just start knitting. But all I can say is that the more I knit, the more I realize just how much time is [...]
Nothing to See Here, Move Along
Lots of behind the scenes stuff going on around here, and not much I can talk about in any way that is even remotely interesting. I know. Bad blogger. I'm sorry. Rest assured, though, that there is good stuff happening. Patterns for Book the Third are coming along swimmingly. Book the second is being put on a boat and sent this way. Mini book is clicking along too. Progress is being made, but it's largely administrative and organizational progress. Important, but not exactly riveting for someone else to read about. On the knitting front, things are similarly quiet. I've finished [...]
Continue the Tradition
The yard work wasn't nearly as disturbing as the painting (nor did it go on for weeks and weeks). But I'd set a precedent with the cuffs and the painters last time, so I wanted to continue it. I started this little cuff on Monday (since that's when I thought the yard folks were coming) and worked on it on and off while they were here on Tuesday. I finished it up Wednesday. Yesterday was blocking and button hunting (I'm not sure this is the right button, but it works for now). Today, I show it off. It's cute and [...]
How to Fix a Yard…in 8 Hours
I'm now officially a fan of the 'hire a professional' approach to lawn care. I am not brave enough to show you any 'before' shots. It's too embarrassing. Just imagine the worst yard on your block. It was worse than that. Far, far worse. Instead of bringing shame on my household, I'll show you some 'during' shots. It all started with a backhoe. It carried on with the backhoe for quite some time. It was oddly fascinating to watch. Alas, they would not let me drive it. After all the old stuff was gone, there as a long period of [...]
More Lies
So that Thursday thing turned out to be a lie. It's the weather's fault, not the lawn company's. It's April, it's Cleveland, the weather is fickle under the best of circumstances. But, yesterday's predicted rain didn't show up, the forecast for today was good, and Thursday got declared likely to be rainy. So the guys are here today. Much as predicted, it is a bit noisy. It's also unreasonably engrossing to watch. It's kind of amazing what two guys with bulldozers can do. They're much faster than I'd be out there with a shovel. There's hope for this place yet. [...]
Any Minute Now
The nice men from the lawn place will be here any minute (hence my unusual state of being awake, upright, clean, and dressed at such an early hour). They came a week or so ago and killed off all the stuff that was destined to go away. Today they rip out the corpses, put in shiny new plants, and spray weird proto-grass paste (which we must dutifully water). They think they can do it all in one day. Should be fun. It will likely also be noisy, but I think it will be worth it. Of course the last time [...]
