But it’s…Pink
There's a reason I knit on dpns. They generally put an upper limit on how many stitches are in a row or round. I know myself, I know I'll get awfully bored if something is much more than 100 stitches around (which is about where my hats come in). Yet somehow, I find myself working on this. This is not on dpns, and it is way more than 100 stitches per row. It takes a flipping age to get through one row, and yes I do get bored in the middle. It's also shockingly, alarmingly pink, which is utterly out [...]
Helper Cat, Part II
Having seen Levon's efforts to aid household order as in the previous post, Barry decided to get in the action too. He absolutely refused to leave the socks alone so I could get a picture of them. Instead, he sat beside them. He patted them with his paw. He laid on them. He generally made it clear that I was supposed to be taking a picture of him and not of something as inconsequential as a silly sock. So here he is, expressing his displeasure that I'm still putting socks in what should clearly be a picture just of him. [...]
Helper Cat
The Rearranging Of The Bookcases is something of a yearly ritual around these parts. The goal this time was to get rid of a few of the less necessary books (book accumulation is the family curse, and if I don't set strict limits I'll be buried) and so make a bit of room. I packed up a box to send to amazon's trade in service (which is rather nifty, if you don't know about it already it's worth a look) and took another box to Half Price Books. All of this noble purging freed up enough space that I could [...]
Goodies
It's been a little while since we had a giveaway, hasn't it? Let's fix that! Way back when, I mentioned that Suzan at Barking Dog Yarns was using one of the patterns from The Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet as part of her new sock club. The February shipment just went out so now I can show it to you. It's a lovely clear kelly green, which will look smashing with the Loasa lateritia sock pattern. See? Doesn't it make you think of spring? I've got a skein of the yarn to mail out to one lucky knitter, and I'll send along [...]
All is Lost
It is possible that I've spent too much time proofreading in the last few days. I'm not sure, but it seems likely. The hissy fit I just threw because I could not find the particular green pen that I'm using to make corrections on this print out might be a hint. The three minute rant I delivered to the cats (no I cannot just use another pen, no not even another green pen, it has to be that pen or else it won't match the edits I've already made and the.world.will.end) could be another hint. As could the fact that [...]
Blooming
I generally kill houseplants. Well no, I generally just avoid buying houseplants. I have no good places for them, and I worry the cats will either destroy them or be destroyed by them. The ones I can't resist usually die quickly in protest of my mistreatment of them. But not this time. This time I was unable to resist a cheap orchid at Trader Joes. My thinking was that it didn't cost any more than a bunch of flowers, and that it would probably last at least as long as they would. That was three weeks ago, when this thing [...]
Sample Cards
Have I explained sample cards to you guys? They're rather nifty, and not something I knew about until I started designing. I just got another one in the mail, so I thought I'd take advantage of this shiny new addition to my drawer of goodies and tell you about them. So we all know that hanging out at yarn stores is the best way to find great yarns. You can see exactly the color and the structure, you can pet the yarn, you can even sniff it if that's your thing. But no one yarn store can have every yarn [...]
No Discernible Purpose
Every now and then, I need to knit something... unofficial. Something I have no intention of using in a pattern. Something mindless. Something I can pick up for 5 minutes here and there between other endeavors. This is it. It's Yarn Harlot's One Row Scarf, worked in some (almost) yarn I (sort of) spun from lace caps many moons ago. It's a single ply, and I'm knitting right off the spindle. It is not fancy, it is not hard, it is nothing but colorful loops. And it's just what I need right now. It is, alas, also hard to photograph. [...]
Breaking out the Machine
I saw this over on Design Sponge and fell instantly in love. It's awesome all on it's own, but they even show it filled with yarn. Very thoughtful of them! It's made from paper, and it seems like the perfect excuse to break out the sewing machine. I have a vague feeling I'd need to get a special super sturdy needle for it (like one of the ones for denim), and I might try out the fancy decorative stitches that my machine makes, but I definitely want to play with the idea. Now...to find the paper...anybody think colored tissue paper [...]
