Cast of Characters
The Chez Violence Home for Wayward Knitting Props has a new resident. It started with Alphonse. Then he was joined by Percival. These two hard working gentlemen have now been joined by Millicent. I think I've mentioned (and I'm sure you've seen in the odd picture here and there) that I have giant man hands. I just do. And I don't really mind (which is good because there's not much I can do about it). For most things, Percival works great. But he is actually a bit bigger than my hand, so if I'm doing something fairly close fitting (or [...]
Moving Target
The goal had been to take a picture of the little yellow bit of knitting. See? Yeah. I know. I hardly see it either. I'm too busy being gobsmacked by Barry and his magical kitten magnatism. Once you're done making eyes with Barry, if you can bear to look away, you'll see a wee bit of yellow in the bottom. The knitting bit of that is all done, and I'm about to do the making up part of it. Should be cool. But not nearly as cool as Barry. Because right now, nothing is as cool as Barry.
Creep
I'm suffering from project creep. It started with 'hey, I bet I can learn this cast on.' Yesterday's wee red mitts were the result of that little fit. That led to 'oooooh, you know what else would be cool?' That thought tipped me elbow deep into the short bits bin to dig out that blue yarn you see right there. Then I had a 'well, three of something is a collection, right?' Which sent me scrabbling back into the very same bin for the yellow yarn and the two buttons (buttons!) What do you think, do those three colors go [...]
Hush
So eventually the banging stopped and the painters went home (get your mind out of the gutter). A blessed hush descended, and the idea of doing something that required more than 45 seconds of sustained attention seemed less daunting. This wee tiny cuff was the result. You'll have to pardon the poor lighting in the photo. It's early morning, my office is dark, and the painters are back so I'm not dragging it outside to photograph (yarn and paint don't mix). It started because I was fiddling around trying to get the hang of the Italian cast on. That led [...]
Bang
Having brawny lads scampering all over your house (banging and scraping and banging and climbing and banging and thumping) is rather more distracting than I had expected. And I had expected it to be distracting. I just hadn't expected it to drive me stark raving mad. And I hadn't expected it to go on for days. What I did expect (it's an old house, it has trained me well), was to find some sort of lurking problem. Don't get me wrong. I love my old house. It's pretty, and it's well made, and it looks and feels like a house [...]
Rampant
Back in the early part of July, when I was up to my neck in a giant school project and starting to go a bit crazy around the edges, I cast on these socks. They helped me avoid chewing my fingernails off. A few days later, the neighbor's son rang the doorbell and handed us a sick kitten. The socks kept me from crying at the vet's office (Douglas is fine, I'm just a total softie about kittens). Then we went to the woods for a family event and off to Portland for Sock Summit and up to Buffalo for [...]
All Other Things Being Equal
The town I live in has a rather...um...zealous housing authority. They inspect all houses every few years and send out letters informing the residents how they get to spend their summer vacations. This year, they decided that Chez Violence was due for a new paint job. Now honestly, we needed it. And we're lazy, so the letter from the housing office was likely a good kick in the pants. But it meant we were in for a rather expensive and intrusive project. We've had folks climbing all over the house for days (and many more days of it to come), [...]
Sock Summit Part VI, In Which We are Refreshed
I realized the other day that I never quite finished writing about the second half of our trip to Sock Summit. Since this is my blog, and since I totally use it as a substitute for the whole scrapbook/travel journal/calendar thing organized folks did in the pre-internet days, I'm going to swoop in and do it now before I forget. Though I warn you, this half of our trip was a bit less yarn-drenched than the first. Feel free to wander away if you're not interested. On Sunday morning we got up and set out. We stopped by the Sock [...]
Winner (and a Nap)
The winner of Laura Nelkin's lovely Adorn pattern collection is Sandra. I'll send an email with directions shortly Sandra! I've got lots of knitterly thing to tell you guys, but both Levon and I seem to have some sort of lingering crud. We're on the mend, but I think a bit of a late afternoon nap (perhaps followed by a slightly lazy weekend) would do us both good. I'll pop back in with a proper post soon. Until then, it's kittens and naps and maybe a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer for me.
