Fat Sock Yarns
Alrighty, as promised, a list of a few of my favorite fat sock yarns. Now it's important to note, these are not the only good fat sock yarns out there. I'm sure there are others, and I'm always looking for more. So, with no further ado, and in no particular order, some of my favorites. Nichole by Schaefer: I love this yarn with an unreasonable passion. It's thick and smooshy, but still fits in shoes (at least my shoes, your shoes may vary). It has a bit of nylon so it lasts forever. I've had some socks in this for [...]
The Mysteries of Gauge
On a lot of my recent patterns, I've included a wee little chart like this. The shaded column on the left is gauge (in stitches per inch). The shaded row on the top lists the various sizes the pattern is written in. The cells in the middle tell you what size finished object you'll get if you make a given size at a given gauge. So with this chart, if you were working at a gauge of 4.5 stitches per inch, and you make the size medium, you'll get a hat with a finished size of 20 inches. This demonstrates [...]
One Down
Thanks to a truly butt-numbing amount of time spent in the car this weekend, the first sock is done, and the second is well underway. The thick yarn has totally spoiled me. These felt like they took no time at all (and the contrast to the other socks on the needles, the cable-filled gray ones, couldn't me more dramatic). I've written them up for testing, and if you want to make your own you can volunteer over here. With any luck at all, I'll have them finished some time in the next few days. Just in time for it to [...]
A Small Change of Plans (or How I Came to Shove Pointy Metal Sticks into Expensive Electronic Equipment)
The plan had been to show you the sock from last time (now slightly taller, how shall you contain your excitement). To this end, I whacked the sock on a blocker, clipped it in place, opened the curtains, and clicked away for a minute. All pretty standard stuff. Such actions are quite a normal part of my life these days. I've stopped questioning them. Then I took the card out of my camera, wandered over to my computer, and shoved it in. Again, I've done this hundreds of times. But this time something felt wrong. The card didn't stop moving [...]
Give me Some Men Who Are Stout-Hearted Men
First, my apologies if the title leaves you whistling terrible songs all day. That song pops into my head every single time I hear someone talk about manly socks (with the substitution of the word 'socks' wherever you hear 'men' of course). I wouldn't want to speculate as to why exactly this happens, but it does. Hopefully I've spread the pain a bit. Now with that out of the way, on to the socks. See? The goal was socks that were thick, blue, and guy-friendly. I'm confident I've gotten the thick part down, and pretty comfortable about the blue part. [...]
Knitter’s Choice
I feel like I have been slacking. This is actually a pretty ridiculous way to feel. I've turned 51 patterns in the last two (and a bit) years. That's a rate of aaaaalmost two patterns a month, which isn't exactly slow. And of course that's only counting the patterns that are out. I've got quite a few lined up and waiting to make their appearance in one form or another. But it's been an unusually long time since I put out a pattern, and it's bugging me. This isn't for any lack of patterns to hand. I have two all [...]
A Knitterly Sort of Place
I love my office. It's just about the most me-ish place in the whole house. Two of the walls are lined with tall bookcases, all filled to bursting with my (obsessively organized and perfectly aligned) books. The floors are covered in lovely rugs. The walls (what you can see of them) are dark red and hung with old framed maps of places The Boy and I have explored on our travels. One corner is occupied by a ancient tatty arm chair. Next to it is an old card catalog filled with all my sock yarn. If you wanted to get [...]
How to Write a Book
I must start by saying that you have totally made my day. I have a tendency to second guess myself, and I get the occasional 'helpful' email or ravelry message explaining that my pattern names are hard or ugly or just plain weird and suggesting that I fix them. I have, so far, politely declined to do any such thing. I like my pattern names, and it is tremendously heartening to know that you feel the same way. Eclectic it is. And with that, it feels like a good time to update you a bit on the progress of Book [...]
Nomenclature and the Vagaries Thereof
I can never quite decide if this sort of thing is helpful, or dreadfully immodest. The most recent episodes of two charming podcasts had some nice things to say about the book. The first is The Knit Girllls (at about 20 minutes in) and the second is Stash and Burn (at about 34 minutes in). I'm thinking at this point I should stop mentioning such things. I have a suspicion that if you're here and reading, you've likely realized the book is there and have already decided if you'd like to have it. I must confess though that I will [...]
