Knitter’s Choice
I feel like I have been slacking. This is actually a pretty ridiculous way to feel. I've turned 51 patterns in the last two (and a bit) years. That's a rate of aaaaalmost two patterns a month, which isn't exactly slow. And of course that's only counting the patterns that are out. I've got quite a few lined up and waiting to make their appearance in one form or another. But it's been an unusually long time since I put out a pattern, and it's bugging me. This isn't for any lack of patterns to hand. I have two all [...]
A Knitterly Sort of Place
I love my office. It's just about the most me-ish place in the whole house. Two of the walls are lined with tall bookcases, all filled to bursting with my (obsessively organized and perfectly aligned) books. The floors are covered in lovely rugs. The walls (what you can see of them) are dark red and hung with old framed maps of places The Boy and I have explored on our travels. One corner is occupied by a ancient tatty arm chair. Next to it is an old card catalog filled with all my sock yarn. If you wanted to get [...]
How to Write a Book
I must start by saying that you have totally made my day. I have a tendency to second guess myself, and I get the occasional 'helpful' email or ravelry message explaining that my pattern names are hard or ugly or just plain weird and suggesting that I fix them. I have, so far, politely declined to do any such thing. I like my pattern names, and it is tremendously heartening to know that you feel the same way. Eclectic it is. And with that, it feels like a good time to update you a bit on the progress of Book [...]
Nomenclature and the Vagaries Thereof
I can never quite decide if this sort of thing is helpful, or dreadfully immodest. The most recent episodes of two charming podcasts had some nice things to say about the book. The first is The Knit Girllls (at about 20 minutes in) and the second is Stash and Burn (at about 34 minutes in). I'm thinking at this point I should stop mentioning such things. I have a suspicion that if you're here and reading, you've likely realized the book is there and have already decided if you'd like to have it. I must confess though that I will [...]
In This House
The Scene: Evening. Dinner bubbling on the stove just about ready to go on plates. I'm finishing up the food, The Boy is setting the table. The Boy: "Darling?" (Except he didn't really say darling, but I'm not telling anyone what he did say, as the pet names of a household really should remain private.) Me: "Yes my love?" The Boy: "Did you know there is a large piece of driftwood on the table?" Me: "Yes indeed." The Boy: "I see. Um. Why is there a large piece of driftwood on the table?" Me: "To prop up a sock for [...]
Not Abandoned
Lest you think I've abandoned sock knitting entirely, allow me to provide proof to the contrary. These are unabashedly complicated. The cables are tiny and intricate. The side cable carries on down the foot. The gusset is shifted around a bit. The heel is ribbed and so is the toe. They are not restful socks. You can't knit them in a dark movie theater (or at least I can't, you may be more clever than I and quite capable of such a feat). They are lovely socks though, and I find them well worth the effort. Or at least I [...]
New Friend
You all know Alphonse by now. He has proven himself an exceptionally helpful house guest. Since things worked out so well with him, I have decided to take on another boarder. Please meet Percival. According to the seller, Percival is a vintage unglazed porcelain rubber glove form. I'm imagining some sort of assembly line with hundreds of them hanging from belts and getting dipped in vats of molten rubber. I have no idea if this is at all accurate, but it's an interesting visual. Don't spoil it for me if I'm wrong. I intend to put Percival to work modeling [...]
Bingo
On 2:59 pm EDT on Wednesday May 4, I became part of an impressive crowd. I was one of thousands of knitters, all poised -- fingers hovering over our refresh buttons, waiting to register for Sock Summit 2011. I had booked my air fare and hotel room months before. I knew was going, no matter what classes I got (or didn't get). Somehow this did not make me want my chosen classes any less. Thanks to the impressive efforts of the masterminds behind Sock Summit, the registration went smoothly. Impressively smoothly. Thousands of rabid knitters, more than a hundred classes [...]
Blushing!
The lovely folks over at Knit Circus were kind enough to say charming things about Silk Road Socks in their most recent issue. I'm totally blushing. I love what Knit Circus is doing (I released Scatterling through them last summer). This is their seventh online issue (they started as a print magazine, but transitioned to an online format last Spring). They do a fabulous job of taking advantage of the opportunities of an online format (links, videos, easy searching) while still maintaining the feel of a traditional print magazine by providing lots of articles and interviews. If they're not already [...]
