Tiny Nonsense

Keen

You know what's nifty?  When the building where your website lives loses power for 32 hours.  It's just swell.  It leads to lots of incoherent muttering and more than one diatribe about the rather whimsical notions of customer service held by the power company.  All of which is to say, sorry if you tried to come by yesterday.  I didn't mean to be away.  With luck, it shouldn't happen again.

Back On The Needles

The drought is over.  After my unaccustomed knitting holiday, I finally got some yarn on the needles last night.  Of course you will have to take my word for it, because what I knit was a swatch.  Well actually a couple of swatches.  More than that, they are swatches for a proposal for someone else's project.  That means they must remain secret. That also means doing a real and proper swatch.  A full on, knit it, *decide 'huh, that part would be better if I did this other thing,' rip it, reknit it with this new idea incorporated, repeat from [...]

Gnomon

I'm not quite sure how to say this.  I haven't knit in, well, days and days.  I think Wednesday was the last time I knit.  That's four whole days with no knitting.  Not a swatch, not a hat, not a sock, nothing. Part of it was that I burned my hand a bit (it's almost completely healed now, no worries).  Part of it was that we got a new dining room table this weekend and spent nearly every waking moment either hauling it in and setting it up, cleaning up after that rather destructive process, playing games, or preparing and [...]

That’s Better

So it seems I've not completely forgotten how to make socks.  I know, it seemed for a while there as though I'd lost my way, but I'm now back on track.  See?  An actual, fresh off the needles, still damp on the blocker, sock. And to speak in my own defense, I haven't really ignored socks for the last two months.  I actually have (yet another) super secret sock on the needles.  These socks are awesome.  Alas, they will have to remain secret for a while yet.  You'll have to content yourself with these guys in the meantime.  Now that [...]

Winners!

Thanks to everyone who entered.  It seems that you guys are as taken with Dream in Colors marvelous work as I am.  I'm happy to announce that Ariel and Andrea were the lucky commenters (as chosen by random.org).  I've sent off emails asking for their mailing addresses and will mail out the yarn as soon as I hear back (which is good, as I might fall too deeply in love with it if I keep it around any longer...sending yarn away is hard). Meanwhile, in actual knitting news, anyone remember these guys?  The sock I cast on in Nova Scotia?  [...]

Take Two

The green mitt from the other day was destined for a rip.  It was just a wee bit too baggy, and I wanted the lace a the cuff to be a bit deeper.  I went down a needle size, which snugged the mitt up just enough.  I also added one more lace row to the cuff, which worked much better with the cowl.  I'm pleased to report that I didn't repeat the blocking mistakes I made on the cowl.  I knew that the secret to maintaining the all important curled edge was to put the pins a few rows in, [...]

What Would Madame Defarge Preorder

If you've been reading for a while, you know I was lucky enough to contribute a pattern to Heather Ordover's upcoming book, What Would Madame Defarge Knit:  Creations Inspired by Classic Characters.  Heather is the mastermind behind the Craft Lit podcast, and this book is a perfect next step on her path to being appointed benevolent dictator for life.  Heather's pulled together a lovely group of designers (I'm still not sure why she let me in...shhhh, don't tell her I'm making this up as I go along!), and has created an absolutely fabulous book. Today, in celebration of Charles Dickens' [...]

Not My Strong Suit

So the plan had been to put this pattern up on Monday.  But it's ready now, and I don't really do patience if I can help it.  Also, there might just possibly be something else going on on Monday that I'll want to squee about.  So I'm putting it out now.  Handy thing, making your own schedule. These are, of course, the magical, sanity-saving, purple hats.  One is for me, and one has made its way into the post to head off to my mom.  The first of these was cast on within hours of getting my hands on the [...]

Book Giveaway

Hey, know anybody who might want a sock knitting book and some yarn?  The lovely Laura Nelkin from Schaefer Yarn is having a wee giveaway of the book and a skein of Nichole in the color Chamomile.  My love of Nichole is well documented.  If you've not had a chance to use it yet, this might be the perfect excuse!
