Knit Along Patterns

The official thread for the February knit along is up on Ravelry.  The individual patterns for these two socks are also now available on Ravelry, in case you prefer to get the patterns one by one.  Some time between now and the start of February, Shannon and I will come up with official rules and post them in the group.  For now, the general idea is: cast on after it gets to be February, finish a pair by the end of March, be entered to win prizes.  Use whatever yarn you like, use whatever color you like, make whichever sock [...]

Morning Routine

Collect camera and knitting and go downstairs.  Make a note of the temperature.  Wish fervently that there were two digits in the number instead of one.  Put the water on for tea (this stuff, I'm addicted).  Put on a pot of oatmeal.  Put on a sweater and hat and shoes.  Go out on the back porch.  Think filthy things about the wind and its effect on exposed skin.  Recall that the pot of oatmeal puts a built in time limit on this little bout of picture taking and get butt in gear.  Whack knitting down on the porch railing.  Waggle [...]

Alarmingly Frilly

This is not a hat, nor is it a sock.  It's not even a mitt.  It is, I'm happy to say, a cowl.  It is also soft, warm, full of lacy goodness, and a delightful shade of green.  On a less positive note, it also seems to be bedecked with a rather troubling number of cat hairs (from my cat of course, it didn't come that way from the dyer or anything).  I debated spending yet more time trying to either pick them off or edit them out, but eventually came to the conclusion that this time could better be [...]

Super Secret Stealth Post

There might just possibly be a wee giveaway of the book over here.  Ya know....just on the outside chance that one of you happened to want a free copy.  Not that any of you knit socks or anything like that.  Does it make me a crazy stalker if I've refreshed a time or two to read the comments? P.S. Oh, and if you're worried about that 'skill testing question' thing, I think it's the Canadian equivalent of the no purchase necessary fine print on contests in the U.S. (and it may only apply to Canadian winners, though I'm not sure).  [...]

Khotan and Gördes

As promised, I'd like to introduce the two socks for our February knit along.  The eastward sock for February is Khotan.  I love them.  I know it's probably tacky to say that about your own design, but, well, it's true.  They're just so crisp and orderly.  They appeal to the part of me that uses a ruler to make sure the books on my shelves are lined up just right.  Everything flows perfectly into the next bit and it just works.  I know, I'm not being modest.  But they really are a (not so) secret favorite. They are made in [...]

Knit Along

Several people, both here and on ravelry, have asked if we'll be doing a knit along for the book.  The answer is of course we are!  I thought I'd take a moment and outline some of the details here. As you may perhaps have noticed, there is a distinct geographical bent to this book.  We're taking shameless advantage of this for the knit along.  The Silk Road is really a vast east/west trade network covering several thousand miles.  People and goods traveled both ways (east to west and west to east) and we're going to structure the knit along in [...]

Hats

Now while I don't generally condone matching outfits, I think there may possibly be an exception for hats. Especially hats that don't really match so much as share some characteristics. The exception is even easier to grant if the hats will generally adorn the heads of people who live in different states. Really, the chances of these hats being worn at the same time in the same place is pretty low. The risk of hat duplication embarrassment would be far higher with a hat from Target, right?  I'm declaring it an acceptable risk. The first hat was made for my [...]

Salor

The last day or two has been a bit of a whirlwind.  The book is done and out in the world.  The electronic versions are going out immediately, and the print versions will go in the mail as soon as they arrive from the printer.  So far, the response has been absolutely lovely.  Lots of folks have said that they bought it for the patterns and then surprised themselves by reading the rest of it, which is about the nicest thing I think a knitter could say. I'm going to indulge myself and show off a few of my particular [...]

Silk Road Socks

Soooooo, this wasn't supposed to happen till tomorrow, but...well...um...it's out now! I'll come back and bore you to death with each of the individual socks over the next few days, but for now, you can go to ravelry to see information (and pictures) right now.  You can also go to Silk Road Socks to order a copy if you're so inclined.  The electronic versions should be delivered to you pretty much instantly, and the print versions will ship out just a bit later.
