Tiny Nonsense

A Scandalous Absence

I know.  It was a shameful lapse.  It came without warning.  It lasted too long.  It's just been that kind of week around here.  There hasn't been any one dramatic upheaval, just lots of little unexpected changes.  It's just been...busy.  Alas, not that satisfying kind of busy where at least you feel like you're getting lots of things accomplished.  Nope.  Instead it's been that really infuriating kind of busy where you feel like you're working crazy hard just to keep up.  And, perhaps worst of all from your perspective, it's the kind of busy that doesn't lend itself to knitting.  [...]

Mind your Ps and Qs

I'm a big fan of Miss Manners.  Don't look at me like that.  Miss Manners is not about shrimp forks or calling cards or white gloves or ladies' maids.  She is, of course, well versed in those things, but she's not trying either to halt the onrush of progress or to make anyone feel inadequate for not having dedicated their lives to collecting eclectic dinnerware.  She's trying to do something both simpler and far more difficult.  She's trying to encourage people to be mindful of the way their actions effect others...and then to consider modifying their actions to make that [...]

The Prettiest Sock Blockers in all the Land

So I'm on a quest.  It's a bit of an odd quest (no princesses or swords or gems here).  But this whole book process has featured all sorts of odd events (and a few really unlikely conversations), so I'm more or less used to it by this point.  I'm out to find the prettiest sock blockers I can. Now I already have a pair of exceptionally useful sock blockers in the size needed for my rather generously-sized feet.  I even already have a pair of lovely mitt blockers.  What I need is pair (or maybe a few pairs) of pretty [...]

Habit-Forming

So it seems I may have picked up a wee bit of a bad habit.  This book thing is a bit addictive.  I'm more or less finished with book one (Silk Road Socks).  I'm deep in the plotting stage of book two (no way am I telling you anything about it yet -- the waiting is helping me build character).  Alas, this is not enough.  I've gone and gotten myself involved in another book. Heather Ordover, English teacher extraordinaire and the genius behind Craft Lit, has had what may well be the best idea in the history of thinking.  She's [...]

Call for Testers

I've just put up a thread calling for tester for these socks.  If you're interested in helping me test them, head over to ravelry and volunteer.  I'm picking testers and mailing out the pattern on Monday, and I'd need one sock made in 2 weeks.

Out of the Bag

Waiting is hard.  We all know that.  I've just never been sure of is if it's harder to be waiting to get something or waiting to share something.  Patience isn't my strong suit in any case.  The lead up to long-awaited events has too often found me hopping up and down like a psychotic kangaroo chanting either "give-me-a-hint!" or "I-have-a-seeee-cret!"  It's not pretty I tell you. So, you can imagine how twitchy I've been having to keep book stuff quiet.  Do you realize that it's been almost five months since I knew I was going to do this?  There have [...]

Book Yarn, Part XIV

Last, but definitely not least, this is the lovely Nate Sock Yarn by Briar Rose Fibers in the color 110 (such a romantic name).  It's a slightly rustic fiber with just a tiny bit of variation in thickness from one spot to the next. I've worked with Briar Rose before.  I first heard about it on Brenda Dayne's marvelous Cast On podcast.  I sought it out at last year's Great Lakes Fiber Festival.  I bought three and immediately turned one into Propitiate for The Boy.  I just cast on with the second a few days ago for an (as of [...]

Scatterling, part the second

Just a quick update.  Back in May, I mentioned that the pattern for Scatterling was up over at Knitcircus.  Their 3 month term over there is up (the new fall issue should be out any day), so now they're available here.   They're a nice versatile (unisex and stretchy) sock written in 2 sizes.  Perhaps they'd be a good start to your <whisper>Christmas knitting</whisper>? Also, thanks to everyone who voted in the SKA poll.  I'm going to be the designer for October.  That's a bit before the book comes out, but I'm going to see if I can't come up [...]

Book Yarn, Part XIII

This lovely temptation is Classic Merino Superwash Sport by Knitting Notions in the color Dark Rose.  My camera decided to lie the day I took this picture. The yarn is actually a bit darker and, well, rosier, in person - more pink and less red. Knitting Notions shows at several of the fiber events in my area, and I've been lucky enough to see all of Catherine's yarns in person.  Her booth is unmistakable and irresistible.  She does a really beautiful job of displaying all her yarn to its best advantage.  If you're going to any of her upcoming events, [...]
