Practicality
I mean of course we need a mitten strap...otherwise it would be far too easy to lose the absurdly small mitten. You've got to be practical about these things you know. Yup. That's it. Practicality is the key here. Uh huh. Carry on.
Baser tendencies
Many lovely people who like the fingerless mitts but prefer mittens: "You should knit mittens!" Me, who knows my own baser tendencies when it comes to heeding the letter vs spirit of a request: "Oh, maybe some day..." I cannot over emphasize how tiny this is. Like an inch across, maybe two inches tall. I can get my pinky finger in there, but only if I give it a little wiggle.
Sneaky ends
It can be tricky to weave in your ends when you can't get to the back of your fabric to hide them. This video over on instagram shows how I handle it. It works perfectly (so well that it can actually be tricky to find them if you ever need to open it back up in the future). The marshmallows should be out later this month (probably around the 14th, it mostly depends on when I manage to get pictures). It won't be for sale, so I'd make sure you're the mailing list if you need some of your own!
Chilled
It's the first properly cold morning of the season here. The kind where you step outside (still in your jammies because that's been fine for the last six months and you've sort of forgotten about coats) and gasp and remember that winter is on its way. And, while I'm not actually at all ready for it to be winter, it does seem like a fitting morning to introduce our little penguin buddies. Their names are Penny and Gwen, and they run the local ice skating rink and throw really excellent parties. No really, their fancy dress ball is the social [...]
A bad sign?
Is it a good sign or a bad sign that I kept seeing this out of the corner of my eye and reaching out to pick it up and take a drink? Like more than once. Significantly more than once. And no, the world absolutely does not need knitted marshmallows. I would never try and tell anyone it did. But somehow I find my day is made better by the knowledge of their existence. I suspect one or two of you may feel the same. And, while I cannot quite bring myself to actually put a pattern for these up [...]
October Housekeeping
The penguin buddies would like to invite you over a sledding party followed by a marshmallow roast. Do be sure to wear your mittens. Monthly housekeeping post (with details on what's coming down and what's coming next over on patreon) is up. Because sometimes, when the whole damn world is on fire, you distract yourself with the cute and the absurd. And honestly, I can't even pretend to feel sorry about it. It feels like a totally valid coping mechanism.
Monthly Reminder
Here’s your monthly reminder that I am staunchly pro abortion. If you are too, I encourage you to speak up! Be loud about it! Make damn sure the people in your life know exactly how you feel. Because I guarantee there is someone in your life who needs someone safe to talk to about abortion. And if you can be that safe person, you should. About one in four people who can get pregnant will have an abortion at some point in their lives. You almost certainly know someone who has had one (or considered having one, or will have [...]
Preparations
Shall we have a little shopping list for our penguin buddies? These are actually built on much the same structure as their friends the owls and foxes, so I am going to scandalously reuse my own earlier work and link to an old blog post where I ran down the owl innards in detail. But the short version is I knit all my buddies with a fingering-weight yarn (just coincidentally, pretty much always Seven Sisters Arts because I swear my stash is like a quarter her stuff and I regret nothing) held double with a silk and mohair lace-weight yarn. [...]
Less sticky
I dunno about your grocery store, but my grocery store occasionally has those GIANT marshmallows, the ones that are nearly the size of a toddler's fist. And they always seem like a good idea, but they are, in reality, nearly impossible to toast evenly and more than a little challenging to actually incorporate into a hot chocolate based concoctions. The knitted equivalent, however, seems ever so much more manageable. Or at least less sticky. I have a plan for these. I'm not saying it's a good plan mind you, but it is an amusing plan. I quietly suggest making sure you're on [...]
