That works too
So, we've been talking about embroidering on things to mend them, and we've been talking about patterns where the plan from the beginning is to embroider on them. But there's something else you can do. You can totally decide to embroider on a pattern that didn't originally call for it. That's what I'm going to do here. This pattern (one of my discontinued ones) didn't originally call for embroidery, but it lends itself to it rather nicely. And since I know I'm going to stitch on it later, I cast on with the color I'm going to use for [...]
Amusements
For reasons I cannot adequately explain, much less justify, one of my very favorite things about the envelopes is embroidering the tiny little heart on as a stamp at the end. I fully acknowledge that this may very well amuse only me, that the rest of you may be regarding me with something between pity and a certain bemused perplexity. But my official policy these days is to just do the stuff that makes me happy as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else (as evidenced by my having added some of those very same embroidered hearts to the knitted [...]
Braid
So the hat? The embroidered hat? Yeah, it has a lot of ends. Because, well, every piece of yarn you embroider with has two ends, and that's just how yarn works, and I'm not actually cool enough to change the fabric of reality. However. I can give you something else to do with at least half of those ends. I ran mine out the top and braided them then tied them in a knot. The braid's much lighter than a pompom, so it doesn't feel heavy or flop around when you move your head like pompoms sometimes can. Plus it's [...]
Dispatch
As promised, Dispatch is back! You can find it on ravelry or payhip. And just before anyone has a chance to ask, yes they open and close, yes you can put things in them! I mean you should know me well enough by now to know I wouldn't pass up an opportunity like that! Love notes, gift cards, baby teeth, you know better than I do the sort of nonsense you could get up to with a tiny envelope (though I'd love to hear what you come up with)! The code NOTE will take 15% off Dispatch between now and [...]
New box of pencils
I firmly believe embroidering on your knitting is the closest thing to coloring you can do with fabric. And sometimes? Sometimes a package comes in the mail and it feels exactly like a fresh box of colored pencils. Yarn is Little Skein Anne and everything she does is magic. This has got to win some sort of prize for shortest time from yarn arrival to cast on. I have A Very Good Plan (and you know I'm never happier than when implementing A Very Good Plan).
Send a little love
So you know how I said I'd occasionally bring back some of my favorite patterns? Yeah, well this one (Dispatch), has been by far one of the most requested. And I know a whole bunch of folks like to make them to tuck little love notes in for Valentines Day, and who am I to stand in the way of a little more love in the world. The pattern should be back out next week (as always, barring any catastrophes between now and then, because wow does the world seem ready to hand out catastrophes these days)! If you want [...]
January Housekeeping
Herbs in the garden in January in Maine means we're doomed. But doomed is more fun with herb-y brown butter rice krispie treats than without them, so I might as well have a snack. I made these on stories the other day and a shocking number of you suddenly found yourselves overcome by a heretofore unsuspected longing for them. The general procedure is 'make rice krispie treats, but toast your cereal with handfuls of herbs, use browned butter also with herbs, and use way more butter and marshmallow than the box tells you to.' But should you want the longer, [...]
Holey, part 5
See, it gets cooler the more you fill it in. Good taste suggests I show a modicum of restraint and call this bit finished. Wouldn't want to overdo it... Though there are a few other holes on this sweater, so I suspect the absurdities will continue for a bit yet. If you want to watch me stitch a few of these and talk about how I make them, I did a bit of that over on patreon.
Holey, part 4
Ok see, I told you it gets better if you keep going! The trick really is to just keep at it. One looks lonely, two or three look kinda sad. But once you start to get a whole bunch of them all hanging out together, they get cuter and cuter. Though I'm not done yet, I want to add a few more in there still. These are dead easy to do, and good for covering lots of ground quickly, so they're one of my favorites for covering up holes/stains/evidence of past crimes. Should you have some unfathomable urge to watch [...]
